A minute repeater sounds the time when you activate it; a sonnerie chimes automatically as time passes. They are different operating modes, not mutually exclusive watch categories: some watches combine both, letting the wearer choose between an on-demand time signal and scheduled chiming.
What is the difference between a minute repeater and a sonnerie?
| Feature | Minute repeater | Sonnerie |
|---|---|---|
| Activation | On demand: the wearer triggers the chime. | Automatic: the watch strikes as time passes. |
| Typical information sounded | Hours, elapsed quarters, then minutes since the last quarter. | Hours and quarters, with the exact sequence depending on the mode and watch. |
| Minutes between quarters | Included in a conventional minute repeater sequence. | Not part of the conventional automatic grande or petite sonnerie pattern described here. |
Both use mechanical striking work, but they answer different needs: the repeater lets you request the time, while the sonnerie announces it automatically. A watch may offer one or both.

How a minute repeater tells the time
A conventional minute repeater sounds three parts in sequence: the hour count, the number of quarter-hours elapsed, and the minutes since the last quarter. Patek Philippe describes a traditional two-gong arrangement in which low tones indicate hours, a two-tone sequence indicates quarters, and higher tones indicate minutes. For example, at 12:59 that illustration produces 12 hour strikes, six quarter strikes, and 14 minute strikes. Patek Philippe explains the sequence and illustrates the mechanism.
A model-specific variation: Patek Philippe Ref. 6301P
The Ref. 6301P uses three gongs and three hammers, so its sequence differs from the two-gong illustration. Its manual specifies a low gong for each hour, a triple-tone sequence on high-, low-, and medium-pitched gongs for each quarter, and a high gong for each minute after the last quarter. At 12:59, the manual’s count is 12 hour strikes, three triple-strike quarter sequences, and 14 minute strikes—35 strikes in all. This is the Ref. 6301P’s arrangement, not a universal repeater strike count. The Ref. 6301P user manual details its sounds and operation.

How grande and petite sonnerie differ
In the conventional distinction, grande sonnerie automatically sounds hours and quarters, repeating the hour at quarter strikes. Petite sonnerie reduces the automatic strikes. The precise reduced pattern is not uniform across every watch, so the model’s documentation matters more than the mode name alone.
Grande and petite modes on the Ref. 6301P
Patek Philippe’s Ref. 6301P makes the distinction concrete. In grande mode, it sounds the hour on the hour and repeats that hour before the quarter count at each quarter. In petite mode, it sounds the hour at the full hour but does not repeat it before the quarter strikes. The watch also provides a silence mode; its minute repeater remains available on demand. Its manual states that the strikework has a 24-hour reserve in grande sonnerie mode and that frequent repeater use reduces that duration. These are specifications and operating notes for this model, not general rules for all sonneries. See the Ref. 6301P manual for its mode settings and reserve guidance.

Why “petite sonnerie” needs a model-level definition
Some watches use petite sonnerie for a pattern that sounds only the hour; others sound quarters without repeating the hour before them. Blancpain’s horology article describes both usages. Treat “petite” as an indication of reduced automatic striking, then check the named watch’s stated sequence rather than assuming one universal pattern. Blancpain’s specialist article discusses the terminology and variation.
Can one watch have both complications?
Yes. A minute repeater and a sonnerie describe distinct behaviors, so a watch can combine them. Patek Philippe says its grande and petite sonneries also include a minute repeater. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Duometre Grande Complication likewise offers grande sonnerie, petite sonnerie, and a minute repeater; its repeater is on demand, and the quarter-melody order differs between repeater and sonnerie modes in that calibre. Jaeger-LeCoultre describes the Duometre Grande Complication and its modes.

What the mechanisms mean for power and operation
Automatic striking consumes energy as the watch chimes, and frequent on-demand use can affect the energy available to the striking work. The Ref. 6301P manual gives its 24-hour strikework reserve specifically for grande sonnerie mode and warns that repeater use shortens that duration. Jaeger-LeCoultre describes Calibre 182 as having separate barrels for timekeeping and chiming, plus a barrel for the automatic trigger and repeater start. That is the architecture of this calibre, not a template shared by every striking watch. The manufacturer’s Calibre 182 page outlines its barrel arrangement.

How to compare a specific striking watch
- Check the trigger: determine whether the watch sounds only when requested, automatically, or in selectable modes.
- Read the sequence: establish which sounds mark hours, quarters, and minutes, and whether the hour is repeated before a quarter strike.
- Confirm what “petite” means for that model: do not infer the exact pattern from the label alone.
- Look for operating modes and cautions: check for silence settings, reserve information, and instructions about frequent repeater use.
- Separate specification from sound judgment: gong count and tone sequence describe construction and signaling, but do not establish which watch sounds better.
