Operate a mechanical minute repeater only by the procedure in the manual for its exact reference. The activation control, winding requirements, water limits, completion cue and service interval vary by model. Never force a control, and let the entire chiming mechanism finish before setting, winding or activating the watch again.
Before activating the repeater
- Identify the reference and consult its manual. Do not assume another watch’s slide or lever works the same way.
- Check its winding and crown position. Follow the manual’s instructions for adequate power and whether the crown must be fully in.
- Do not force a blocked or abnormal control. Some movements have interlocks; forcing controls can cause failure. Contact the maker or its authorized service channel if a control does not operate normally.
How to activate it safely
Use the exact gesture specified for the watch, then leave it alone until the sound and any additional mechanism run-down have ended. Two manufacturer examples show why one gesture cannot be generalized:

Let the full sequence finish before activating the repeater again. Patek Philippe’s Ref. 5260 manual says the sequence must end completely before another activation. Do not set or wind the watch while it is chiming. For that Patek reference, do not operate the winding crown during the chime or for 30 seconds afterward; that wait is specific to its instructions, not a universal rule.
Wait for the mechanism, not just the sound
On Credor’s 7R11, the mechanism continues running for a few seconds after the sound ends. Wait until its slow governor stops before proceeding. Other models may use a different completion cue or wait; follow the exact manual.

Winding and power requirements depend on the model
A repeater activation draws energy, so check the maker’s winding instructions before using it. The figures below apply only to the named watches:

These turn counts and reserve consumption are model-specific, not a general winding formula for minute repeaters. If a watch has stopped or been left unwound, follow its restart instructions rather than repeatedly testing the chime.

If a restarted watch sounds inaccurate
Patek Philippe says its Ref. 5260 may temporarily indicate the wrong time after an extended period unwound, because oil may have thickened at some points. Its manual says correct operation should return within one or two hours after rewinding. That explanation and timeframe apply to this reference; persistent trouble on any watch warrants advice from the maker or authorized service provider.

Assume a repeater is not water-resistant unless the manual for its exact reference explicitly says otherwise. A case slot for the repeater control can be a route for moisture: Patek Philippe warns that liquid must not contact Ref. 5260 because moisture can enter through its slide slot. A water-resistant crown does not override that warning.

These examples do not establish a general water rating for repeaters. Check the relevant manual, and avoid operating controls underwater or while the watch is wet, in line with Patek Philippe’s general care recommendations.
For exterior cleaning, gently wipe the watch with a soft microfiber cloth; Bucherer recommends this approach. Minimize water contact with a leather strap. Exterior wiping is not a reason to open the case or attempt movement cleaning or repair. Patek Philippe’s general guidance also advises avoiding shocks, prolonged vibration, extreme temperature changes and strong magnetic fields. If performance changes after magnetic exposure, it recommends demagnetization through an official service center or authorized retailer.

Service it on the exact model’s schedule
Manufacturer recommendations differ, so use the interval for the exact reference and confirm the current authorized service route. The consulted official sources give these model-specific intervals:

Arrange service through the maker’s authorized network for damage, persistent inaccurate chiming or abnormal control behavior. Do not attempt to open the case, oil the movement or repair repeater components yourself.
