Minute Repeater Watch FAQs: Chime, Power Reserve, and Servicing

A minute repeater strikes hours, quarters, and minutes on demand. Here is how the chime works, what reserve figures mean, and how servicing differs by reference.

A minute repeater sounds the time on demand. When you activate its slide or pusher, it strikes the hours, the quarter-hours, and the minutes elapsed since the last quarter. Whether activating it draws on the power reserve, how long a full wind lasts, and how the watch should be serviced all depend on the exact reference. The figures below are examples to check against each manufacturer’s documentation, not universal specifications.

How the chime turns time into sound

In a conventional minute repeater, the time is announced by different pitches. A low-pitched gong sounds once for each hour. Two gongs sound together for each quarter-hour. A high-pitched gong sounds once for each minute remaining after the last quarter. Small hammers strike gongs arranged around the movement. Patek Philippe and Jaeger-LeCoultre both describe the same principle: hours, quarters, and exact minutes are told apart by their sound.

Patek Philippe’s “The Patek Philippe Sound” page uses 12:59 as its worked example, because it produces the largest number of strikes. The same page states that its President, Thierry Stern, approves the sound of every minute repeater leaving its workshops.

Strike count at 12:59

Element Strikes Pitch
Hours (12 o’clock) 12 Low
Quarters (three quarters passed, two strikes each) 6 Paired notes
Minutes past the last quarter (14 minutes) 14 High
Total 32

This is the sequence Patek Philippe describes for its conventional mechanism. Decimal repeaters and sonneries use different schemes, so do not assume that another brand’s repeater will follow the same count or order.

Does a minute repeater chime every minute?

Not automatically. A conventional minute repeater does not strike each minute of the clock. It sounds only when you activate it, and each activation gives one sequence reflecting the time at that moment. The minutes it announces are only those past the last quarter-hour, so the high-pitched count ranges from zero to fourteen.

How long does a full wind last, and what does activation cost?

Manufacturers publish different kinds of power figures, and they are not interchangeable. Some state a total running reserve after a full wind. Others state the energy one chime consumes, or a threshold below which activation is blocked. The table lists the examples available from manufacturer documentation.

A. Lange & Söhne ZEITWERK Minute Repeater Activation blocked when remaining reserve is below twelve hours A lockout threshold built into this model A. Lange & Söhne product page

The practical lesson is that a running reserve figure tells you how long the watch runs on a full wind, while a per-chime figure tells you how much each activation costs. Credor advises winding the watch sufficiently before use so the chime does not stop mid-sequence. A. Lange & Söhne’s lockout exists to prevent the same interrupted strike. Neither figure applies to other calibres. Identify the reference first, then read its own reserve section.

  1. Check the power reserve before activating the repeater, and wind the watch if the reserve is low. Credor’s instructions for the BG7R11S give this advice explicitly.
  2. Push the slide fully to its stop, then release it fully. Do not pull the slide down.
  3. Let the sequence finish completely before activating the repeater again.
  4. Do not turn or pull the crown while the repeater is striking or for 30 seconds afterward. Patek Philippe warns this can damage the mechanism and may not be covered by warranty.
  5. If a control feels blocked, stop and consult the manual rather than applying force.

Water and moisture

Patek Philippe states that reference 5260/1455R is not protected against moisture ingress at the minute-repeater slide slot, even though its crown is water-resistant. That warning is specific to this watch. Case and control designs vary, so check the water-resistance documentation for your exact model. Unless the manufacturer expressly permits contact with liquid, keep the watch away from it.

Servicing

For reference 5260/1455R, Patek Philippe recommends a service at least every three to five years. Owners are directed to an Authorized Patek Philippe Retailer, which sends the watch to Patek Philippe’s Geneva manufacture. The manual describes Geneva as the only location authorized to service that watch.
