In general, let every strike sequence finish before you activate the slide again, keep the crown alone while the watch is chiming and for a short period afterward, treat the slide as a moisture entry point unless the manual says otherwise, clean only the outside of the case, and send any internal work to authorized service on the manufacturer’s schedule. The specifics below come from manufacturer manuals for three brands, and they differ from model to model.
What the chime is telling you
A conventional minute repeater sounds the time on demand, using distinct tones. Hours are struck low in pitch. The quarter hours are struck as paired high and low notes. The minutes elapsed since the last quarter are struck with high-pitched tones. Patek Philippe’s own explanation of this sequence (Patek Philippe, “Patek Philippe Chiming Watches”) uses 12:59 as an example and counts 32 strikes for that moment. Because the chime is a sequence of small hammers striking gongs in a fixed order, any interruption while it runs matters. That is why the rules below focus on timing and on what you do with the crown and slide.
Activating the repeater without interrupting it
The operating motion is specific to the reference. For the Patek Philippe references 5078R and 5316, the manuals describe a single, complete movement of the slide.
- Push the slide fully to its end. The reference 5078R manual is at the 5078R instructions for use, and the reference 5316 manual is at the 5316 instructions for use.
- Release the slide completely. Do not pull it back down, because a partial return can leave the mechanism in an unintended state.
- Keep your hands off the crown for the full duration of the chime. The Patek Philippe manuals also say not to operate the winding crown during the chime or for 30 seconds afterward, because doing so could damage the repeater.
- Do not activate the slide again until the sequence has finished. Patek Philippe’s manual states: “The strike sequence of the minute repeater must be allowed to end completely before it is activated again.”
Jaquet Droz uses a different set of cautions for its Grande Seconde Minute Repeater. Its manual says not to move the hands while the repeater is active, and to wait until both the chime and the mechanism have stopped before activating it again. The manual does not state a 30-second crown interval; follow the wording in your own manual.

Carl F. Bucherer’s manual for its Manero Minute Repeater Anniversary Edition does not give a comparable crown or slide lockout in the instructions consulted for this guide. If the chime is interrupted or the hands stop moving normally, stop using the watch and take it to service.
Water and moisture: what each manual allows
Water resistance is the most common point where owners assume too much. A repeater’s slide is a mechanical opening, and the case rating can differ from a time-only watch. Check the manual for your reference before exposing the watch to any liquid, rain, or humidity.

Patek Philippe references 5078R and 5316
Patek Philippe says the watch has a water-resistant crown, but the slide slot means it is not protected against moisture ingress. The manuals advise keeping the watch away from liquid. Treat these references as unsuitable for swimming, showers, or any wet environment, and dry the watch promptly if it is splashed.
Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Minute Repeater
Jaquet Droz’s manual is direct: “Kindly remember: This watch is not water-resistant.” Keep this model away from water altogether.

Carl F. Bucherer Manero Minute Repeater Anniversary Edition
Bucherer’s manual gives this model a water resistance of 1 atm, which it describes as resistance to drops and light rain only. Do not read this as permission for immersion or for exposure to pressure from water sports. The manual recommends checking water resistance annually, and it recommends minimizing water contact with the leather strap.
Across these examples, do not assume that one repeater’s rating applies to another. The rating in the manual for your reference is the only one that matters.

Cleaning the outside, not the movement
For routine care, Bucherer’s manual recommends gently wiping the case with a microfiber cloth. A soft microfiber watch cloth is a reasonable accessory for this purpose and is the only product the cited manuals specifically recommend. Avoid liquid cleaners and polishing compounds, and do not apply any liquid near the slide. Do not open the case, and do not attempt to clean the repeater mechanism at home. Work inside the case belongs to authorized service.

When a long-idle repeater chimes inaccurately
Patek Philippe’s manuals document one specific, temporary behavior. If a watch has been left unwound for a long time, the oil in the mechanism may have thickened, and the repeater may not indicate the correct time at first. According to the manuals, normal function returns within one or two hours after the watch is rewound. This is a documented behavior for those Patek Philippe references only.
If the chime is inaccurate after the watch has been wound and has had time to settle, or if you notice unusual sounds, grinding, or hands that jam, stop using the watch. Do not try to correct it with the crown or slide, and take it to an authorized service center.
