A minute repeater that stays silent usually has one of a few causes: the mainspring is not wound enough to start the striking mechanism, a crown or control is not in the position the maker requires, the activation slide or pusher was not taken through its full travel, or a previous striking sequence is still running. If moisture may have entered the case, stop there and go to service. Otherwise, work through the checks below in order, using the instruction manual for your exact model, and never force a control.
How a minute repeater is meant to sound
A minute repeater strikes the time on demand rather than continuously. Patek Philippe’s explainer describes two hammers striking two gongs: a lower tone for the hours, paired tones for the quarter-hours, and a higher tone for the minutes. IWC describes the conventional order as hours, then quarters, then minutes. Its all-or-nothing slide is built so the watch does not sound a partial sequence if the slide is released early:
“The all-or-nothing-piece slide, as it is known, ensures that the mechanism will never chime out an incomplete – and thus incorrect – series of acoustic tones even if the repeating slide is released too early.”

That design detail matters for troubleshooting. A repeater that produces no sound at all usually means the mechanism did not start, which narrows the checks to power, control position, and control travel.

Checks to run, in order
1. Confirm the mainspring has enough wind
Start with the power state. Credor lists an unwound or nearly unwound mainspring as a reason its repeater may not chime, and advises winding the mainsprings. Wind the watch as your manual describes and then try activation again. Some designs go further and block activation below a set reserve. A. Lange & Söhne’s ZEITWERK Minute Repeater is one example, as the table below shows. On a model with that lockout, a low reserve produces silence even when every other condition is right.
2. Check that the crown is in its normal position
Credor lists a crown left at the first click as a reason its repeater may not activate, and directs owners to return the crown to its normal position. Seat the crown fully in its normal position as your manual describes. If it resists, stop. The goal is to confirm the crown is where it should be, not to force it into place.

3. Use the activation control through its full travel
Many repeaters are started by a slide on the case side. H. Moser & Cie. instructs owners to push the slide as far as possible. Patek Philippe’s instructions for use say to push the slide all the way up and release it completely. A partial stroke can leave the mechanism unstarted, so repeat the full action once, exactly as written. Some models use a pusher or a different procedure altogether, so the manual for your watch governs.
4. Let any running sequence finish
If the watch has just struck, or you pressed the control during a striking sequence, wait for it to end. Patek Philippe warns owners not to wind while the repeater is working or for 30 seconds afterward, and says to let the full striking sequence end before activating it again. Credor’s safety instructions likewise warn against forcing controls while the mechanism is operating. Pressing again mid-sequence is not a reliable test.

5. Allow for a long period unwound
Patek Philippe says a watch left unwound for an extended period may temporarily indicate incorrectly, because the oil may have thickened. It states that normal function should return within one or two hours after rewinding. That is the manufacturer’s guidance for its own watch, not a timetable for every movement. If the watch still does not chime after being wound and run for that period, move on to the service steps below.
6. Treat possible moisture exposure as a service matter
Patek Philippe warns that the slide slot on the watch it covers allows moisture to enter, even though other parts of the case may be described as water resistant. If the watch may have been exposed to water, do not test its water resistance, try to dry it, or open the case. Those steps belong to a qualified watchmaker.

How activation and service differ by model
The features that decide whether a repeater can be started, and who should service it, vary by maker and model. The table covers only the cited instructions. “Not stated” means those instructions do not address that point.
