In the 2016 110 Years Anniversary Limited Edition, that unusual movement architecture sits alongside a “mystery” time display whose hands appear to float on transparent sapphire discs. The design is technically distinctive, but its stated aim of improving isochronism is not evidence of independently measured accuracy.
What is the Montblanc Tourbillon Bi-Cylindrique?
The name is most closely associated in the available specialist coverage with the Villeret Tourbillon Bi-Cylindrique 110 Years Anniversary Limited Edition, introduced in 2016. It is a manually wound watch powered by Montblanc calibre MB M65.63, combining a one-minute tourbillon and a double cylindrical balance spring.
Hodinkee reported that the anniversary edition was limited to three pieces. That is a production figure for this specific edition, not a statement about every watch ever associated with the Bi-Cylindrique name. Hodinkee’s 2016 report describes the edition and its design.
How does the double cylindrical hairspring work?
A conventional flat hairspring coils in a plane. In the Bi-Cylindrique arrangement, two cylindrical hairsprings sit concentrically, one inside the other. Specialist coverage describes them as having different diameters and moving in opposite directions.

The reported design rationale is to counter eccentricity in the balance system and support isochronism—the consistency of the balance’s oscillations over time. This explains the intended engineering benefit, not a demonstrated accuracy result: the cited coverage does not provide an independent accuracy test or a quantified comparison with a conventional spring.
What do the tourbillon and movement figures tell you?
The tourbillon is a one-minute mechanism: its cage completes a rotation once per minute. WatchProSite reported 284 components for calibre MB M65.63 and 95 components for the tourbillon, describing the latter as hand-finished in-house. These are the publication’s reported product figures, not independently audited counts. It also reported an approximately 46-hour power reserve for the calibre. WatchProSite’s 2016 review gives those specifications.

- Global warming accelerates glacial melting, causing severe ecological damage to Earth. Inspired by “Never-Melting Ice,” Agelocer's Swiss Chief Designer Etienne Ruffieux grand launch this full sapphire case free-sprung balance flying tourbillon watch, urging awareness of climate change. Honored with the 2022 German Design Award for its exceptional design, this tourbillon is globally limited to 100 pieces.
- The entire watch case is crafted from 5N (99.999%) high-purity sapphire crystal; 5N-grade sapphire crystal boasts a Mohs 9 hardness rating (second only to diamond) and exceptional transparency. Its superior hardness renders the case scratch and wear resistant, ensuring a flawless, long-lasting finish that stands the test of time. High transparency enables us to clearly appreciate the mechanical artistry of the ultimate skeletonized flying tourbillon.
- Self developed design CAL9001 free-sprung balance flying tourbillon movement, manual winding, 28,880 vibrations/hour, 25 ruby bearings. Satin brushed finish and chamfered edges with premium finishing techniques; Brand logo engraved and gold foiled. Dual mainspring series technology delivers 80-hour power reserve (twice that of standard tourbillon movements). This technology ensures more uniform and gradual mainspring release, resulting in enhanced timekeeping precision and stability.
- The CAL9001 tourbillon movement features the exclusive free-sprung micro-adjustment technology typically found only in luxury timepieces. This free-sprung system eliminates the need for a balance spring regulator, thereby overcoming the timing inaccuracies caused by regulator displacement in conventional mechanical movements. This ensures the watch delivers enhanced precision and stability in timekeeping.
- 50M water resistance for the entire watch; food-grade semi-transparent silicone strap, water/sweat/corrosion resistant, comfortable and durable to wear. Super-LumiNova luminous hands, paired with a butterfly double-press clasp. We promise a three-year global warranty service.
A tourbillon is a conspicuous complication, but its presence alone does not establish that a watch will keep better time in everyday use. No independent performance figures are established for this model in the cited coverage.
What does Heures Mystérieuses mean?
Heures Mystérieuses refers to the watch’s floating-hand effect. The hands are carried by transparent sapphire discs, with the mechanism supporting and driving them around the discs’ edges. Because the anniversary edition has an open, skeletonized construction, the discs and their gearing can be seen rather than hidden behind a conventional dial. The hands do not literally levitate; the impression comes from the transparent supports and visible mechanical arrangement.

Why does the anniversary edition have a serpent motif?
The 2016 design connects Montblanc watchmaking with its writing-instrument history. Hodinkee links the serpent motif to the Rouge et Noir pen line. Its report describes a hand-engraved serpent and a 52 mm red-gold case; the case measurement is a launch-era specification reported for this anniversary model, not a measurement of every Bi-Cylindrique watch. Luxois’s coverage also describes the serpent design and the watch’s two complications.

What is known about availability and value?
The three-piece production figure describes the historical edition size; it does not establish whether one is currently for sale. The cited material does not establish present-day stock, price, condition, authenticity, or servicing options. A current listing would need to be assessed on its own provenance and condition rather than treated as confirmation of routine availability.
