Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →First, check the email address or phone number shown in the prompt. If it matches the account currently signed in on your iPhone, complete the password and six-digit verification step, then restart and update both devices. If it shows an older or different account, the request usually comes from Media & Purchases, an app downloaded with another account, or a restored purchase—not from your normal iCloud login. If it appears during setup and names a previous owner, it is Activation Lock, which cannot be removed by repeatedly entering your current password.
Apple now calls Apple ID Apple Account, but the existing email addresses, phone numbers, and passwords still work. Apple explains the name change here.
Identify which password the Apple Watch wants
“My Apple Watch keeps asking for my Apple ID password” can describe several different prompts. The correct fix depends on the wording and the account identifier displayed.
| What you see | What it usually means | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| A four- or six-digit code to unlock the watch | This is the Apple Watch passcode, not your Apple Account password. | Enter the watch passcode or follow Apple’s passcode-recovery procedure if you have forgotten it. |
| An email address or phone number followed by a password request | An Apple Account, iCloud, or device-authentication request. | Compare the identifier with the account on the paired iPhone. |
| “Sign in to complete purchase” | Usually App Store, Media & Purchases, an app update, an automatic download, Family Sharing, or a pending transaction. | Check the Media & Purchases account and recently installed apps. |
| An Activation Lock screen during setup or after erasing | The watch is still linked to an Apple Account through Find My. | Use the linked account, or ask the previous owner to remove the watch from their account. |
A correct password does not always complete an Apple Account sign-in. The request can return when two-factor authentication has not finished, the wrong Apple Account is being used for purchases, the device cannot reach Apple’s servers, or the watch is linked by Activation Lock.

- Durable, woven cable with fast-charging capabilities for select Apple Watch models. Simply hold the connector near the back of the watch, where magnets cause it to snap into place automatically.
- Supports fast charging on Apple Watch Series 7 and later and Apple Watch Ultra models. Supports regular charge times on all other models.
- Compatible with all Apple Watch
- USB-C Cable Length: 1m or 3.2 feet
The quickest diagnostic: compare the account names
Do this before resetting the watch or repeatedly entering a password.
- On the paired iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Tap Sign-In & Security.
- Review the email addresses and phone numbers associated with the Apple Account.
Apple allows verified email addresses and phone numbers on the same account to be used for sign-in. Therefore, the identifier may look different from the one you normally use while still belonging to the correct account. You can review the available sign-in identifiers in Apple’s account-identification guidance.
Now check the account used for purchases:
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap your name.
- Tap Media & Purchases.
- Note the account shown there.
The account under Media & Purchases can be different from the primary iCloud account. Some people intentionally use one Apple Account for iCloud and another for App Store purchases. An old account can also remain attached to an app restored from a backup or installed by another family member. See Apple’s current Media & Purchases sign-out and account-migration instructions.
If the prompt shows your current Apple Account
Enter the current password once, carefully, and complete every verification step. If Apple asks for a six-digit code, use the code sent to a trusted phone number or shown on another trusted Apple device. An Apple Watch running watchOS 6 or later can also display a verification code when it is already a trusted device. Apple describes the available methods in its two-factor authentication guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you do not receive a code, select Didn’t Get a Code? and request a text message or phone call, or choose another trusted device when available. A password can be correct while the sign-in remains incomplete because the verification code was never accepted.
Do not keep guessing passwords after a failed attempt. Repeated incorrect attempts can lock the Apple Account. If the account becomes locked, disabled, or inactive, follow Apple’s account recovery or reactivation instructions.
Fix 1: Complete sign-in in the Apple Watch app
Use this when the prompt shows the correct account and the watch otherwise works normally.
- Keep the Apple Watch and iPhone close together.
- Unlock the iPhone and open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap General.
- Tap Apple Account.
- Sign in with the account shown in the prompt.
- Enter the six-digit verification code if requested.
- Leave the devices near each other for several minutes while the sign-in completes.
Apple provides this manual sign-in path for a watch that was not signed in during initial setup: Apple Watch setup and Apple Account sign-in.

Fix 2: Reauthenticate Media & Purchases
Use this branch when the prompt appears while downloading or updating an app, says “Sign in to complete purchase,” or displays an account different from the one at the top of iPhone Settings.
- On the iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap your name.
- Tap Media & Purchases.
- Tap Sign Out.
- Tap Media & Purchases again.
- Choose Not [your name]? or the option to sign in with another account.
- Sign in with the account that should own the apps and purchases.
After signing in, update the watch’s apps from the watch itself:
- Open App Store on the Apple Watch.
- Tap Account.
- Tap Updates.
- Update the affected app or tap the option to update all available apps.
Content obtained with a different Apple Account cannot normally be updated while the device is signed in to another purchasing account. If you cannot find a purchase in the current account, Apple recommends checking the purchase history of other Apple Accounts that may have been used: Apple’s purchase-history troubleshooting guide.
Should you migrate purchases?
Apple offers a purchase-migration feature for some users who have a primary account and a secondary account. It is an optional long-term consolidation route, not a universal fix for this prompt. Eligibility can depend on account ownership, two-factor authentication, country or region, Family Sharing, balances, payment status, and other conditions. Apple says the feature is not available in India. Check the current purchase-migration requirements before changing accounts.
Fix 3: Find the app causing the request
An old app is a particularly likely cause when the prompt appears after an update, restore, or automatic installation. The request may belong to the account that originally obtained that app.
Temporarily stop automatic installation so you can identify the culprit:
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap General.
- Turn off Automatic App Install.
- Return to My Watch and scroll to Available Apps.
- Install compatible apps individually, starting with apps obtained under the intended Apple Account.
If one app causes the password prompt to return, remove that app from the iPhone, then reinstall it while signed in to the correct purchasing account. Install its watch version manually afterward if necessary. Apple documents the Automatic App Install and Available Apps controls.
There are also two related settings on the watch:
- Apple Watch > Settings > App Store > Automatic Downloads controls whether watch versions of apps purchased on other devices are automatically installed.
- Apple Watch > Settings > App Store > Automatic Updates controls automatic app updates.
Turn these off temporarily if downloads are repeatedly triggering the request, then restore them after the account and app problem is resolved. Disabling automatic installation is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix; reports of this issue have involved different accounts and different causes. Apple’s App Store settings documentation explains these controls.

Family Sharing and Ask to Buy
On a child’s watch or a watch managed through Family Sharing, a download may require approval from the family organizer rather than the watch owner’s ordinary password. Check whether Ask to Buy, Screen Time restrictions, or the organizer’s account is involved before changing the watch’s main Apple Account.
Fix 4: Restart both the iPhone and Apple Watch
Restarting only the watch may leave the paired iPhone’s authentication session unchanged. Restart both devices after completing the account sign-in or Media & Purchases steps.
Restart Apple Watch normally
- Hold the watch’s side button until the sliders appear.
- Tap the power button.
- Drag the Power Off slider.
- After the watch shuts down, hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
Shut down and restart the iPhone using its normal power controls. Use a force restart only if the watch cannot shut down normally: hold the side button and Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Apple’s restart instructions specifically reserve force restart for situations in which a normal restart is not possible.
Fix 5: Update iOS, watchOS, and the apps
Install the newest software supported by the particular iPhone and watch model. Software versions are model-dependent and change over time, so do not assume that the newest watchOS can run on every Apple Watch.

- Download and install the available update.
Apple generally requires the iPhone to be updated and connected to Wi-Fi, the watch and iPhone to be near each other, and the watch to have at least 50 percent charge. Keep the watch on its charger during installation. See Apple’s watchOS update requirements and compatibility information.
For reference, Apple’s release page listed iOS 26.6 and watchOS 26.6 as released on July 27, 2026, in a snapshot dated August 10, 2026. That version information is time-sensitive; use Software Update to determine what is currently available for your hardware. Apple states that watchOS 26 requires an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE third generation or later, running iOS 26. Older watches receive the newest version compatible with their hardware. The dated release information is available on Apple’s security and software-release page.
Fix 6: Check the network and Apple’s services
If the password is accepted but the prompt instantly reappears, the iPhone or watch may not be completing communication with Apple’s servers.
- Check Apple’s System Status page for Apple Account, iCloud, App Store, and related outages.
- Connect the iPhone to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
- Try another Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot if the current network filters or fails Apple services.
- If Wi-Fi is unavailable, confirm that the iPhone has working cellular data.
- Try the sign-in again after an outage has ended.
A spinning sign-in screen or a message that the device cannot connect to a server points more strongly to network or service availability than to a wrong password. Apple’s sign-in troubleshooting guidance recommends checking service status, updating devices, and trying another network.

Fix 7: Sign out of iCloud and sign back in carefully
Use this only after checking the account identifier, Media & Purchases, two-factor authentication, apps, network, and software updates. It can refresh a stale authentication state, but signing out affects several iCloud services and is not a harmless toggle.
Before signing out:
- Wait for iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, Contacts, Notes, and other data to finish syncing.
- Create a current iCloud or computer backup.
- Make sure you know the Apple Account password.
- Confirm access to a trusted phone number or trusted Apple device for verification.
- Understand that iCloud sign-out can affect iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, Keychain, Find My, Apple Pay, Messages in iCloud, and other services.
Then follow this path on the iPhone:
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name.
- Scroll down and tap Sign Out.
- Choose Sign Out But Don’t Erase when offered.
- Follow the on-screen prompts.
- Restart the iPhone and Apple Watch.
- Sign back in to the iPhone.
- Open the Watch app and check My Watch > General > Apple Account.
Signing out of iCloud on the paired iPhone also signs the Apple Watch out of iCloud. Apple warns that data not yet synced may be removed from the device during sign-out, although it remains in iCloud. Read Apple’s iCloud sign-out guidance before proceeding.
Activation Lock: the important exception
Activation Lock is not a normal password loop. It is enabled automatically when Find My is set up on the paired iPhone. The Apple Account email address or phone number and password linked to the watch are required to unpair it, pair it with another iPhone, or turn off Find My. Apple explains Activation Lock on Apple Watch separately from ordinary sign-in problems.
Suspect Activation Lock when:
- the prompt appears during initial setup;
- the watch was erased and now asks for an account before pairing;
- the identifier belongs to a previous owner, seller, or former family member;
- the watch cannot be paired even after a factory erase.
Erasing the watch from the watch itself does not remove Activation Lock. Repeatedly resetting it will not bypass the lock. The previous owner must remove the watch from their Apple Account or Find My, usually by unpairing it from their iPhone or removing it from their account remotely. Apple’s used Apple Watch guidance explains what a previous owner must do.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Last resort: unpair and pair the watch again
Unpairing is appropriate when the account is definitely yours, both devices are updated, sign-in and Media & Purchases are correct, and the prompt still returns. It erases the watch, so do not begin until you understand the backup and cellular-plan choices.
Before unpairing
- Keep the watch and iPhone together and charged.
- Make sure you know the Apple Account password.
- Confirm that the watch has recently synced or that a backup can be created.
- If the watch has cellular service and you will pair it with the same iPhone, plan to keep the cellular plan.
- Remove the cellular plan only if you are selling, giving away, or cancelling service for the watch.
Unpair through the paired iPhone
- Open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap All Watches.
- Tap the information button next to the watch.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch.
- Confirm the watch name.
- Keep the cellular plan if you are pairing this watch with the same iPhone.
- Enter the Apple Account password when asked.
- Pair the watch again.
- Choose Restore from Backup when offered.
Unpairing from the paired iPhone erases the watch, restores its factory settings, and removes Activation Lock. The iPhone attempts to create a backup during the process. Apple’s complete instructions are in How to unpair and erase an Apple Watch.
If the password prompt returns immediately after restoring the backup, pair the watch again and choose to set it up temporarily as new. Do not reinstall every app at once. If the prompt disappears when set up as new, a restored app, purchase, or setting is the likely trigger. Add apps individually until the problematic item is identified.

When to contact Apple Support
Contact Apple when:
- the Apple Account is locked, disabled, or cannot be reactivated;
- you no longer have access to any trusted phone number or trusted device;
- Activation Lock names a previous owner;
- the watch cannot be unpaired because the linked account is inaccessible;
- the prompt continues after the watch is set up as new without restoring apps;
- Apple’s services appear operational, the network works, and server-side authentication still fails repeatedly.
Before contacting support, record the exact wording of the prompt, the account identifier it shows, the watch model, iPhone model, iOS and watchOS versions, and whether the request appears during setup, app installation, updates, or normal use. That information helps Apple send the issue to the correct account, purchase, Activation Lock, or device-support path.
What not to assume
- Do not assume the password is wrong. Two-factor authentication, account mismatch, a disabled purchasing account, network failure, and Activation Lock can all produce a repeated request.
- Do not assume the watch has been hacked. An unfamiliar account is more commonly an old App Store account, a family member’s account, an app restored from backup, or a previous owner’s Activation Lock.
- Do not treat Automatic App Install as a universal fix. Turn it off when app installation is the trigger, then identify and replace the affected app.
- Do not sign out of iCloud casually. Prepare a backup and allow data to sync first.
- Do not erase the watch as a first response to Activation Lock. Erasing without unpairing leaves Activation Lock enabled.
- Do not assume a software update proves a bug has been fixed. Apple’s public release notes do not establish one universal recurring-password-prompt bug across all watch models and software versions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Apple Watch keep asking for my Apple Account password even though it is correct?
The password may be correct but the sign-in may still need a six-digit two-factor verification code. Other common causes are a stale watch or iPhone authentication session, a separate Media & Purchases account, an app downloaded with another account, a network problem, or Activation Lock.
Why is my Apple Watch asking for an old Apple ID password?
The old account is often the account that originally downloaded an app or purchase. Check Settings > your name > Media & Purchases, then disable Automatic App Install and review Available Apps in the iPhone’s Watch app. Reinstall the affected app while signed in to the intended account.
Will resetting my Apple Watch remove Activation Lock?
No. Erasing the watch from the watch itself does not remove Activation Lock. The watch must be unpaired through the paired iPhone with the linked Apple Account, or the previous owner must remove it from their account.
Should I turn off Automatic App Install?
You can turn it off temporarily when the prompt appears during app downloads, updates, or after a restore. It helps identify whether an app is responsible, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every Apple Watch password prompt.
What should I do if the verification code never arrives?
Tap “Didn’t Get a Code?” and request a text or phone call, or use another trusted Apple device. If you cannot access any trusted verification method, use Apple’s account-recovery process or contact Apple Support.
The Bottom Line
Start with the account identifier, not the password: compare it with Settings > your name > Sign-In & Security and Media & Purchases. A current account calls for completed two-factor authentication, a restart, and software updates. An old account calls for purchase and app cleanup. A previous owner’s account during setup means Activation Lock, which only the linked owner—or Apple after reviewing valid proof of purchase—can resolve.
