What makes this NY0040 a personal dive watch
Garzón bought his NY0040 used and asked a watchmaker to test its water resistance before his trip. On an introductory dive in Lanzarote, he reports descending to 6 meters. He later writes that the watch accompanied almost every dive over the next two years, as he earned Open Water and Advanced Open Water certifications.

The detail that matters most for an owner is not simply the model’s water-resistance rating: Garzón says his individual watch was checked for leaks before he used it for diving. His experience does not establish the condition of another watch, especially a used one, or replace an inspection of that specific watch.
Garzón’s full account appeared in Fratello Watches on September 20, 2021. He described his watch as “a 41.5mm stainless steel ISO-certified dive watch featuring Citizen’s own 21-jewel automatic Miyota caliber 8200.” That wording belongs to his 2021 account and should not be merged with specifications for a different regional reference.

Specifications depend on the exact NY0040 reference
NY0040 is used for a Promaster mechanical diver family, so a suffix and region help identify which specification applies. Citizen Watch Europe’s current listing for the NY0040-09EC specifies a 42 mm stainless-steel case, 12 mm thickness, automatic caliber 8204, 20 bar water resistance, a screw-down crown and case back, a unidirectional rotating bezel, a black polyurethane strap, and 20 mm lug width.
Garzón’s Fratello article instead describes his watch as 41.5 mm, 12 mm thick, with a 21-jewel Miyota caliber 8200, day and date, hand-winding, a crown at 8 o’clock, mineral crystal, and 20 mm lugs. These are the details reported for his watch in 2021; they are not a substitute for checking the exact reference on another example.

The differences are not a reason to assume one specification is wrong: the sources describe different references or contexts. For the European NY0040-09EC, use the European product listing; for a watch with another suffix, look up that reference and its manual rather than borrowing the 09EC’s movement or measurements.
What the 20-bar figure can—and cannot—tell you
Citizen lists 20 bar for the NY0040-09EC, while the 2021 Citizen Italia brochure identifies the NY0040-09E and NY0040-17L as ISO 6425-certified professional mechanical divers rated to 20 bar. Those are manufacturer specifications for the cited references. They do not verify the present-day water resistance of a particular watch, whose seals and condition can change over time.

Garzón’s story illustrates the practical distinction: he did not rely on the model name or rating alone; he had his used watch checked before diving. If you plan to take an NY0040 underwater, confirm the exact reference and have the individual watch’s water resistance assessed by a qualified watchmaker. His recreational-diving account is not an independent model test or a guarantee for your example.

- Identify the full reference. Check the case or documentation for the complete NY0040 reference, including its suffix; do not assume every NY0040 has the same specification.
- Match the movement and region. Compare the watch with the relevant official regional product information. Citizen Watch Europe’s NY0040-09EC listing applies to that reference.
- Look up the manual. Use Citizen’s official manual lookup and search with the product or movement number shown for your watch.
- Check the individual watch before diving. For a used or older example, arrange a water-resistance check rather than treating a published rating as a current condition report.
Why the NY0040 story resonates
A dive-watch spec sheet says what a reference was designed and rated to do; it cannot tell you whether an individual used watch still seals properly. Garzón’s account is memorable precisely because it connects the two: a capable mechanical diver, a real recreational-diving journey, and a check of that particular watch before it went in the water. Read it as one owner’s experience, with the reference and condition caveats intact.
