A first watch is easier to choose when you start with how it is powered, how it fits, what you need it to do, and how you will care for it. Quartz and mechanical describe different movement systems; automatic is a kind of mechanical winding. Water-resistance markings and service advice are model-specific, so the watch’s manual matters more than a number viewed in isolation.

How does a watch movement work?

The movement is the mechanism that keeps time and drives the display. The main distinction is how it is powered and regulated.

Quartz

A quartz watch uses an electronic circuit and a quartz crystal to regulate timekeeping; many models draw power from a replaceable battery. Quartz is a movement category, not a promise that every watch has the same battery life or features.

Mechanical and automatic

A mechanical watch stores energy in a mainspring. A hand-wound model requires the wearer to wind it; an automatic, or self-winding, mechanical watch winds its mainspring through the natural motion of the wearer’s arm. OMEGA’s manual uses “self-winding” in this sense. An automatic may still need winding or resetting if it has stopped, depending on the model and its instructions.

Light-powered quartz

Some quartz watches use light instead of relying on routine battery replacement. Citizen describes its Eco-Drive technology as converting natural and artificial light into energy, without requiring battery replacement, charging, or winding for constant operation. That description applies to the named technology, not to quartz watches as a whole. Citizen: Eco-Drive FAQ

Which features matter for your first watch?

Start with your routine rather than a model name. A watch worn at a desk, during exercise, or in water may need different functions and care. Check these factors against how you will actually use it:

  • Power and winding: Decide whether you prefer quartz convenience, a mechanical watch you wind, an automatic movement, or a light-powered system.
  • Fit: Consider the case diameter and thickness, the shape of the case and lugs, and whether the strap or bracelet can be adjusted. Try the watch on if possible; the same diameter can feel different on different wrists.
  • Display and functions: Choose between a simple time display and added features such as a date, chronograph, or other complications. More functions are useful only if you will use them.
  • Materials and wear: Consider case, crystal, bracelet or strap materials, comfort, and how much everyday wear the watch is likely to see.
  • Water resistance: Match the watch’s marking and manufacturer guidance to the activities you have in mind. Do not infer suitability from a collection name or a rating alone.
  • Ownership: Read the model’s care and service instructions and account for the ongoing attention its movement and materials require.
  • Budget: Set a limit that includes any expected ownership costs, not just the initial purchase.

OMEGA’s named collections include Constellation, Seamaster, Speedmaster, and De Ville. Those names cover different designs and models, not a universal beginner ranking. OMEGA’s March 26, 2026 Constellation Observatory announcement, for example, describes Master Chronometer testing; a label or feature should be checked against the individual model rather than assumed to apply to every watch in a collection. What does Master Chronometer mean?

In its model manual, OMEGA defines a Master Chronometer as a mechanical timepiece that has passed METAS tests focused on chronometric precision, magnetism, power reserve, and water resistance, with a movement meeting the chronometer criteria cited in that manual. It describes a specific certification, not a general feature of mechanical watches. Verify the exact model’s current specifications and certification before relying on the label. How should you read a water-resistance marking?

Use the marking on the watch together with its manual to establish suitable activities. A pressure-based rating is a test condition, not a direct statement that you can take the watch to the same depth in real use. Seiko’s guidance distinguishes ordinary splashes from swimming, bathing or shallow diving, and scuba use; the appropriate category depends on the specific marking and its table. Seiko: water-resistance guidance

  • Check the case marking and the manual’s activity guidance before exposure to water.
  • Do not treat a rating such as “30 m” as an invitation to dive to 30 metres.
  • Follow the manual on using the crown and pushers around water; Seiko advises against operating the crown while wet.
  • After seawater exposure, rinse the watch with fresh water if the manufacturer says it is suitable for that care.

Water resistance can change over time. Seiko identifies aging gaskets and deformation after shocks as factors; OMEGA’s manual also warns that aging gaskets or an accidental shock to the crown can affect resistance. The OMEGA manual states, “A watch cannot be guaranteed fully waterproof at all times.” For its model 310.32.42.50.04.001, OMEGA’s care guidance recommends an annual water-resistance test; treat that as advice for the model covered by that manual, not a rule for every watch. What care and servicing should you expect?

Follow the instructions for the exact model. Manuals may specify crown position, cleaning materials, rinsing after salt water, and when to seek a water-resistance check or service. Avoid applying one watch’s schedule to another: movement, construction, use, climate, and owner care can all affect maintenance needs.

OMEGA’s manual for model 310.32.42.50.04.001 gives a general service rule of every 5 to 8 years, while stating that frequency depends on the model, climate, and care. That is manufacturer guidance for a particular manual, not a universal interval for all OMEGA watches or watches generally. Consult your own manual and the manufacturer or an authorized service channel for model-specific advice.

A simple first-watch decision

  1. Choose the power system that fits your habits: quartz or light-powered quartz for a different ownership routine from hand-wound or automatic mechanical watches.
  2. Try for a comfortable fit and check the case dimensions, strap or bracelet adjustment, and materials.
  3. List the functions you will use and disregard complications that add complexity without meeting a real need.
  4. Match water resistance to your activities using the exact marking and manual, not a depth figure by itself.
  5. Read the care instructions before buying so the watch’s maintenance and service expectations are part of your decision.
