The 18K-gold watch was a commemorative presentation piece Armstrong received in 1969—not the steel Speedmaster associated with his Apollo 11 lunar walk.
What happened at the auction?
RR Auction sold the watch as lot 7000 at a live auction at the Royal Sonesta in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on April 17, 2025. The auction house listed an estimate of $2 million or more and reported a final total of $2,125,000 including buyer’s premium. That total is not the hammer price; RR Auction did not state the hammer price or provide a detailed fee breakdown. RR Auction’s lot listing and its post-sale announcement report the result.
Who bought it?
RR Auction said the winning buyer was a private collector who requested anonymity. The watch’s ownership beyond that reported sale has not been established publicly in the cited coverage.
Which Omega Speedmaster was sold?
The lot was described by RR Auction as Armstrong’s personally owned and worn 18K solid yellow-gold Omega Speedmaster Professional, reference BA 145.022, numbered 17. It was presented to him at a special dinner at Houston’s Hotel Warwick on November 25, 1969. The caseback is engraved “Astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, Gemini 8 – Apollo 11” and “To mark man’s conquest of space with time, through time, on time.”

RR Auction’s catalog says Omega initially made 26 gold commemorative watches for NASA astronauts, both living and deceased. The auction lot included an Omega “Extract from the Archives,” which RR Auction says describes the watch as a “Special numbered edition to celebrate the ‘Apollo XI’ moon landing.” That wording identifies it as a commemorative edition; it does not show that this gold watch went to the Moon.
What are its specifications and condition?
According to RR Auction’s catalog, the watch has a 42 mm 18K-gold case, solid-gold dial, burgundy-red bezel inlay, gold bracelet and a Lemania-based caliber 861 chronograph movement. The catalog described its cosmetic condition as very good, while noting bezel scuffs and caseback scratches; it also said the watch did not appear to have been polished or modified. These are the auction house’s descriptions, not an independent inspection.

Was this the watch Armstrong wore on the Moon?
No. The gold BA 145.022 was a commemorative presentation watch given to Armstrong after Apollo 11. It was not the steel Speedmaster he wore during the lunar EVA. Fratello’s auction preview says that lunar-worn steel watch is displayed at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. The two watches have different histories: one is a gold commemorative gift, the other is associated with the Moon landing itself. Fratello’s preview makes that distinction.

RR Auction said half of the hammer price would go to charities selected by Mark Armstrong, Neil Armstrong’s son. The consignor separately pledged a portion of proceeds to the Wisconsin-based Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation. The auction house did not state the precise hammer price or the final amounts donated, so the premium-inclusive sale total cannot be used to calculate either contribution.
