It pairs the collection’s tachymeter-bezel Performance Chronograph design with a digital perpetual calendar, in a black Ceratanium case and bracelet. IWC describes it as the first Performance Chronograph with a perpetual calendar.
What makes the IW388801 distinctive?
The watch brings together two functions with different jobs: a flyback chronograph for timing, and a perpetual calendar that displays the date and month digitally on large double-digit discs. A separate display indicates the leap year. The combination is the central distinction of this release, rather than a new standalone calendar or chronograph movement claim.
IWC gives the dial a hammered texture and uses gold-coloured calendar discs against an otherwise predominantly black design. The bezel is black ceramic, polished and marked with a tachymeter scale. These are manufacturer design descriptions, not independent assessments of finish or wear.
Case and construction
IWC specifies a 43 mm case diameter and a height of 16.5 mm. The case, pushers, crown and bracelet are made from Ceratanium, while the tachymeter bezel is ceramic. IWC describes Ceratanium as a titanium alloy that is machined and heat-treated to take on ceramic-like properties and a matte-black finish; that description does not establish that the material is scratch-proof or indestructible. The official product page lists water resistance at 10 bar.

How the digital perpetual calendar works
The large date and month displays use double-digit discs, with the leap-year indication at 6 o’clock. According to IWC’s launch explanation, the calendar accounts for different month lengths and adds a leap day every four years. The brand says all four calendar discs can be set using the crown.
IWC also explains that the mechanism stores energy as the calendar advances day by day, then releases it at month or year changes when additional discs need to move. This is the manufacturer’s description of the mechanism, not an independent movement teardown. As with any perpetual calendar, correct setting matters; follow IWC’s instructions for the watch rather than attempting adjustments without checking the manual.

Chronograph functions
The chronograph measures hours, minutes and seconds and includes a flyback function. Its stopped hours and minutes are read together on a totalizer at 12 o’clock. IWC also lists small hacking seconds.
The bezel’s tachymeter scale can be used with the chronograph to calculate average speed over a reference distance. It is a timing aid, not a speed sensor: the scale’s result depends on timing a known distance as intended.
