URWERK’s white UR-230 is officially named the UR-230 Polaris; launch coverage also called it the UR-230 Ceramique. URWERK says fiberglass reinforcement is intended to address conventional ceramic’s brittleness, but the available sources do not establish independent impact-test results.
What is the UR-230 Polaris?
The Polaris is the white-cased member of URWERK’s UR-230 family. URWERK’s official collection page uses “Polaris,” while Fratello’s December 11, 2024 launch coverage uses “UR-230 Ceramique.” The name difference does not indicate a separate movement or complication: the white edition retains the UR-230’s UR-7.30 automatic movement and satellite-based time display. URWERK’s collection page currently presents Polaris alongside the Black Star and Eagle variants.
The launch was limited to 35 pieces, with a stated price of CHF 150,000 excluding tax. Those are announcement terms from 2024, not confirmation of current stock or resale value. URWERK’s launch announcement is the primary source for those details.
What makes the white case different?
URWERK describes the case material as a proprietary ceramic-based composite: woven ceramic sheets and fiberglass plies are combined within a polymer base. The company developed it for its own watches and says the fiberglass reinforcement is meant to mitigate the shattering risk associated with conventional heat-sintered ceramic. That is the manufacturer’s design rationale, not a guarantee that the case cannot break; the cited launch materials do not report independent impact testing.

The resin is white and the fiberglass is light silver. Machining reveals the layered construction, so the case’s appearance shifts with its curves and viewing angle rather than reading as a completely uniform white surface. The launch release attributes the contrast between the white exterior and dark movement to inspiration from 2001: A Space Odyssey and NASA’s Apollo-era aesthetics; that is art director and co-founder Martin Frei’s stated reference, not a technical comparison.
How does the UR-7.30 display time?
The UR-7.30 presents the hours on a satellite complication: hour markers travel across an arc, with the active satellite indicating the current hour. A three-dimensional retrograde minutes hand tracks the minutes and returns to its starting point at the end of its scale. This unconventional layout is the central timekeeping display; it is not a conventional pair of central hands.

The movement is automatic and can also be wound manually. Its winding system includes a turbine-based air-brake regulator that URWERK says attenuates external shocks and manages airflow to regulate rotor winding. A control can disengage automatic winding, and indicators show winding status and airflow/brake settings. These features give the wearer ways to monitor and alter the winding system; they do not change the satellite display.

What the “tougher” claim does—and does not—mean
The Polaris case is not simply described as ordinary ceramic in a new color: its layered composite construction incorporates fiberglass in a polymer base. URWERK presents that structure as a response to ceramic’s brittleness. The cited materials do not provide laboratory impact results or independent comparative testing, so “tougher” should be understood as the maker’s material proposition rather than a quantified performance claim.
