The brand’s 2025 Planétarium automaton belongs in the wider story of Poetic Astronomy, but it is an Extraordinary Object—not a wristwatch.
What are the new Van Cleef & Arpels Poetic Complications watches for 2025?
The Midnight Jour Nuit Phase de Lune is the specific wristwatch the Maison’s current collection page identifies as new. Van Cleef & Arpels’ 2025 presentation also brought attention to the Lady Arpels Bal des Amoureux Automate, whose mechanical scene and later award make it an important related creation. The official pages cited here do not establish that the Midnight Jour Nuit Phase de Lune first debuted at Watches and Wonders 2025, so its status as a new model should not be tied to a particular event date.

What does the Midnight Jour Nuit Phase de Lune do?
It shows day and night
The day/night indication makes the passage from one part of the day to the other visible on the dial. It is distinct from the moonphase: one display represents the day-night cycle, while the other indicates the current phase of the Moon.

It adds a moonphase display
The new model brings those two astronomical indications together. Van Cleef & Arpels distinguishes it from the earlier Lady Arpels Jour Nuit on this functional point: the Phase de Lune adds a moonphase display to the day/night complication. The Maison says the moonphase entered its watchmaking history in 1929; that date is the brand’s own historical account.
It uses a self-winding movement and offers animation on demand
The collection page specifies a self-winding mechanical movement and on-demand animation. It identifies white gold, yellow gold, white mother-of-pearl, and aventurine glass in the product image description. How does the Lady Arpels Bal des Amoureux Automate animate?
The watch depicts a couple in a guinguette-inspired setting. According to Van Cleef & Arpels, the lovers meet and kiss at noon and midnight through the automaton movement; the wearer can also trigger an animation on demand. Its stated movement features are a self-winding mechanical movement, double retrograde function, automaton mechanism, and on-demand animation. The case and dial description lists rhodium-plated 18K white gold, diamonds, and enamel.

In the Maison’s account of the mechanism, each figure comes to life at noon and midnight, leans toward the other, and lowers its arms through a translational movement and three joints. Van Cleef & Arpels says developing the watch involved four years of research and development. On November 14, 2025, Van Cleef & Arpels announced that the Lady Arpels Bal des Amoureux Automate won the Mechanical Exception category at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève 2025. The Maison presents the collection as a meeting of mechanical expertise, precious materials, and métiers d’art, with each dial carrying a story. In its framing, retrograde displays, rotating discs, and on-demand animation are mechanisms used to express that narrative. This is the manufacturer’s description of its creative approach, not an independent evaluation of the watches.

The Planétarium extends the Maison’s Poetic Astronomy theme beyond wristwatches. Van Cleef & Arpels says its Sun and planets are visible from Earth and move at their actual rotation speeds. During an animation accompanied by a crystalline melody, a shooting star indicates hours and minutes on a 24-hour dial. The listed functions and features are a planetarium module, perpetual calendar, hour/minute dial, on-demand animation, and carillon.
The distinction matters: the Planétarium is classified by Van Cleef & Arpels as an Extraordinary Object, not a watch launch. The brand’s 2025 announcement also describes Naissance de l’Amour as an Extraordinary Object; neither should be counted as a wristwatch model.
