Frederique Constant CEO Niels Eggerding describes a strategy built around two ambitions: develop more watchmaking in-house while keeping the brand’s value positioning central. In a 2024 WatchTime interview, he discussed the company’s movement program, its three-year planning horizon and the effect of Citizen’s ownership. A 2025 Hodinkee interview later examined the tension between that value proposition and the pursuit of higher-end complications.
How Eggerding came to lead Frederique Constant
Eggerding told WatchTime interviewer Martin Green that he had worked with founders Aletta and Peter Stas since 2012. Citizen acquired Frederique Constant in 2016; Eggerding said the founders appointed him to help facilitate the transition while preserving the brand’s character. Hodinkee identified him as CEO since 2018.
He characterized his role as setting direction: “My primary task is to articulate a clear vision and strategy for the company,” he said in the WatchTime interview published August 5, 2024. That is his account of the job, rather than an independent description of the company’s governance.
Why the company developed its own calibres
Eggerding traced Frederique Constant’s movement-making effort to 2004. In his account, reliance on external suppliers exposed the business to supply-chain risks, while manufacture movements could help distinguish its watches. “This decision dates back to 2004 when we recognized the risks associated with relying solely on external suppliers,” he told WatchTime in 2024.

In that same interview, Eggerding said Frederique Constant produced 33 in-house calibres in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva. This is a dated statement from the CEO, not a verified current count. A 2023 German-language WatchTime interview search result had referred to 31 manufacture calibres; the two figures suggest development over time, but do not establish a precise growth rate or a current total.
How the brand plans calibre development
Eggerding said Frederique Constant plans about three years ahead when deciding which calibres to develop and whether its team can deliver them. “Being a young brand, we always plan three years ahead, determining what calibre we aim to develop each year and assessing if our team can handle it,” he told WatchTime on August 5, 2024.

He described development as coordinated work across teams involved in development, construction, technical work and watchmaking. He also said that moving quickly should not come at the expense of product quality. These are Eggerding’s descriptions of the company’s approach, not independently audited measures of its output.
What Citizen’s ownership changed, according to Eggerding
Eggerding’s stated benefit of Citizen’s ownership was broader distribution and access to sales opportunities. He pointed to dedicated business units in several markets. His comments describe the benefit as he sees it; they do not establish that Citizen changed Frederique Constant’s watchmaking strategy or provide a quantified sales impact.

The balance between value and higher-end watchmaking
In October 2025, Hodinkee framed the company’s challenge as pursuing more ambitious watchmaking without losing its value proposition. The article reported that value-priced watches made up more than 90% of Frederique Constant’s production volume. That is a figure reported in the 2025 coverage, not a separately identified statistical study or a current forecast.
The same coverage discussed the company’s pursuit of higher-end complications and precious-metal cases alongside pressures including rising input costs, the strong Swiss franc and U.S. tariffs. The picture is one of a brand trying to expand its watchmaking range while maintaining a large value-oriented production base; the interview coverage does not quantify the effect of those cost pressures.

How Eggerding says the company stays close to consumers
Eggerding described Watches & Wonders as a platform for a growing brand to reach consumers, retailers and the press and present new work. He also said he and his teams travel to meet consumers and understand changing needs. The official Watches and Wonders Geneva 2025 event listing confirms a Time Talks appearance with Eggerding identified as Frederique Constant CEO, but does not provide a transcript of the video.
