Who is Rainer Nienaber?
The Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI) profile identifies Rainer Nienaber as a watchmaker based in Bünde, Germany, and gives his birth year as 1955. It describes a path from toolmaking and watch repair into watch creation and manufacturing, with a particular interest in unusual time indications.
Retrograde displays are a recurring part of that work, rather than a single design feature attached only to the Retro-2. The AHCI profile describes watches with retrograde hours and minutes, a retrograde seconds hand, and the Tri-Retrograde, which uses three retrograde hands.
How does the Retro-2 display time?
In its February 5, 2009 report, WatchTime described the Retro-2 as an automatic watch with hour and minute scales that follow arcs across the dial. The two titanium hands sit at six o’clock and align vertically every twelve hours.

A retrograde hand travels along a scale and then returns to its starting point when it reaches the end, instead of continuously circling the dial. On the Retro-2, that makes the hour and minute indications visually distinct from conventional central hands. The report does not specify the precise duration or mechanics of each hand’s return.
