Baselworld did not close because of one decision or COVID-19 alone. The watch fair was already struggling to adapt to a changing industry, and its relationship with major exhibitors had deteriorated before the pandemic postponed its 2020 edition. A dispute over exhibitor fees and the withdrawal of five leading brands turned that long-running tension into a final break: in May 2020, organizer MCH Group said Baselworld would not hold its planned 2021 show.
Baselworld’s collapse, in brief
The story resembles a divorce more than a sudden shutdown: the format had been under strain, the organizer and exhibitors were no longer aligned, and the pandemic-era fee dispute accelerated the split. That is a useful metaphor, not a complete account of private negotiations. The public record shows the parties’ stated positions and the sequence of decisions, not everything that happened behind closed doors.

Baselworld was a major watch and jewelry trade fair in Basel, Switzerland. MCH Group organized it. Its decline involved both the fair’s long-term relevance and the immediate disruption caused by COVID-19; neither explanation alone accounts for the outcome.
Baselworld’s final years: a timeline
2018: MCH begins resizing the fair
MCH Group’s 2018 annual report describes that year’s Baselworld as shortened and downsized in response to structural changes in the watch and jewelry industry. The organizer said it made further adjustments for 2019, but Swatch Group’s departure significantly impaired its effort to realign the event. MCH Group annual report

July 2018: Swatch says it will leave
Swatch Group announced that it would stop exhibiting at Baselworld from 2019. Its stated objection was that annual fairs no longer made sense in an industry moving faster in product launches, distribution, and marketing. The company also criticized MCH’s priorities. Those were Swatch’s reasons, not a neutral finding that every watch brand shared its view. Swatch Group statement, reported by WatchPro
2019: Baselworld continues without Swatch
The fair went ahead, but without one of the industry’s largest groups. MCH’s report places the loss within its continuing attempt to reshape Baselworld. The available figures do not establish a complete, comparable annual series for attendance or exhibitors, so isolated totals should not be treated as proof of the fair’s trajectory.
February–March 2020: COVID-19 disrupts the event
Baselworld was scheduled for April 30–May 5, 2020. MCH postponed it because of the coronavirus outbreak. Reuters reported that MCH offered exhibitors options that included carrying 85% of their fees forward and retaining 15% to cover out-of-pocket costs. The proposal became a source of conflict as exhibitors sought a settlement for a show that would not take place. Reuters report on the postponement and exhibitor response
April 14, 2020: five brands announce they will withdraw
Rolex, Patek Philippe, Chanel, Chopard, and Tudor said they would not exhibit at the planned 2021 Baselworld. They also announced plans for a Geneva show with the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie. Rolex cited the event’s evolution and MCH’s recent decisions; Patek Philippe described a breakdown in trust. Their statements point to a relationship problem that predated the cancellation of the 2020 event. Reuters report on the brands’ withdrawal

May 7, 2020: MCH settles the 2020 dispute and drops the 2021 show
MCH announced an agreement with exhibitor representatives on settlement for the cancelled 2020 edition. It also said it would not hold Baselworld 2021, which had been planned for January 28–February 2. The organizer’s announcement marks the end of the planned annual fair, rather than a claim that a new Baselworld edition was merely delayed. MCH Group statement on the settlement and Baselworld 2021
2027: a different Basel fair is planned
MCH Group and Informa Markets announced Basilia Jewellery & Watch Fair, a new joint venture with its first edition planned for April 8–11, 2027. The announcement presents Basilia as a new platform, not as Baselworld revived under another name. MCH Group and Informa Markets announcement

The annual-fair format was losing relevance for Swatch
Swatch argued that a single annual event could not keep pace with a faster-moving watch business. In its 2018 statement, the group said it had decided that “from 2019 onwards, it will no longer be present at Baselworld.” That explains Swatch’s decision; it does not establish that all exhibitors viewed the format the same way. Swatch Group statement, reported by WatchPro
The organizer–exhibitor relationship had weakened
MCH’s own 2018 report says Swatch’s exit significantly impaired its realignment effort. In 2020, Rolex objected to the event’s evolution and MCH’s recent decisions, while Patek Philippe cited lost trust. These public explanations support the conclusion that the dispute went beyond a single event’s date or fees, but they do not disclose the full private negotiations. COVID-19 forced MCH to postpone the April–May 2020 event. MCH later announced that it would not hold the planned January–February 2021 edition. The pandemic also affected MCH’s wider exhibition business: its 2020 annual report says sales in the combined Exhibitions and Venues segments fell CHF 174.6 million, or 67%, compared with 2019. That figure covers those company-wide segments, not Baselworld alone. MCH Group 2020 annual report
The fee dispute became a flashpoint
MCH’s proposal to carry forward most exhibitor fees while retaining a portion for costs sharpened tensions when the 2020 fair was postponed. The settlement announced in May resolved the dispute over the cancelled edition, but the brands’ public reasons also included longer-running dissatisfaction with the fair and its organizer. The fee disagreement was part of the rupture, not a complete explanation for it. Reuters report on the postponement and exhibitor response MCH Group statement on the settlement
Was Baselworld cancelled because of COVID?
COVID-19 caused the postponement of Baselworld 2020 and formed the immediate crisis around the next edition. But the fair’s problems predated the pandemic: MCH had already shortened and downsized the 2018 event, and Swatch had announced its departure in 2018. The pandemic made the conflict operational and urgent; it did not create every underlying disagreement.
Is Baselworld coming back?
No Baselworld edition was planned after MCH announced in May 2020 that it would not hold the 2021 show. Basilia Jewellery & Watch Fair, planned for Basel in April 2027 by MCH Group and Informa Markets, is a separate new event. Calling it Baselworld’s return would go beyond what the organizers have announced. MCH Group statement on Baselworld 2021 Basilia announcement
