The NOMOS Ludwig 33 duo enamel white (refs. 242/249) is the smaller, simpler two-hand option; the Ludwig 38 enamel white (refs. 236/237) adds a small-seconds display and a larger case. Both have enamel-white dials, tempered-blue hands, hand-wound movements and 3 atm splash-proof water resistance. The detailed specifications below are for 33 duo ref. 249 and 38 ref. 237; caseback details can vary by reference.

The figures for the Ludwig 33 duo ref. 249 come from NOMOS’s product-page specifications accessed in 2026; the page gives no publication date. The Ludwig 38 ref. 237 figures are from a NOMOS datasheet whose technical status is July 2025; NOMOS notes that technical changes may occur. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.
How the cases differ on the wrist
Ludwig 33 duo: compact proportions
At 32.8 mm across and 42.2 mm lug-to-lug, ref. 249 is the smaller watch and has a 17 mm lug width. Its 6.6 mm height keeps the profile slim. The 42.2 mm lug-to-lug measurement can help assess how the watch may span your wrist, but fit also depends on wrist shape and the way the strap curves.
Ludwig 38: more dial and wrist presence
Ref. 237 measures 37.5 mm across, 6.8 mm high and 19 mm between the lugs. NOMOS’s reviewed datasheet does not state its lug-to-lug length, so diameter alone cannot establish how it will fit a particular wrist. The 38 is larger in diameter, but that does not make it universally better suited to a given wrist.

The lug widths also matter if you plan to change straps: the listed ref. 249 takes a 17 mm strap, while ref. 237 is listed at 19 mm. Check spring-bar fit, strap length and end shape before buying a replacement; width alone does not confirm compatibility.
Dial layout and visual character
Both editions pair an enamel-white dial with tempered-blue hands. NOMOS describes the Ludwig 33 duo dial as having Roman numerals and railroad minute markers, calling it “a true classic” on its product page. The 33 duo keeps the display to two hands, without a seconds subdial; the Ludwig 38 shows small seconds in the family catalog imagery.
Rank #2
- Featuring a Black Band, Silver-tone Case, Scratch Resistant Sapphire Crystal
That is the clearest design choice between them: the duo has a more restrained, uncluttered display, while the 38 gives seconds their own dial. The difference is about preference, not a difference in the basic enamel-white and blue-hand combination.
Movement and power reserve
Alpha.2 in the Ludwig 33 duo
The hand-wound Alpha.2 in the 33 duo has a stated reserve of up to 43 hours. NOMOS says Alpha.2 is based on its Alpha caliber, with a modified second wheel and smaller staff, and uses it in smaller two-hand versions of the Tangente, Orion, Ludwig and Tetra. That movement arrangement suits the 33 duo’s two-hand display.

NOMOS rates both watches at 3 atm and describes them as splash-proof. Treat that rating as protection against splashes, not as an indication that either watch is suitable for swimming or diving.

The detailed listings for refs. 249 and 237 specify sapphire crystal glass backs. The Ludwig 33 duo is listed as refs. 242/249, and the Ludwig 38 as refs. 236/237; do not assume that every variant in either family shares the reviewed reference’s caseback configuration. Confirm the exact reference when comparing listings.
Price and availability depend on region and timing
Official NOMOS US pricing and stock status are snapshots, not permanent comparisons. When the ref. 249 product listing was retrieved, it showed USD 2,150 and “Sold out online”; that is a US listing status at that time, not a current worldwide price or proof of availability elsewhere. The catalog presented model pricing when retrieved, but prices and stock can change. Check the official NOMOS page or a local authorized retailer for the exact reference and current regional availability before deciding.

- Choose the Ludwig 33 duo enamel white if you want a smaller case, a two-hand dial without small seconds, and the Alpha.2 movement’s stated reserve of up to 43 hours. Confirm whether ref. 242 or 249 matches the caseback configuration you want.
- Choose the Ludwig 38 enamel white if you prefer a 37.5 mm case and a small-seconds display, and value the DUW 4001’s stated reserve of up to 53 hours. Its reviewed ref. 237 datasheet does not give lug-to-lug length, so compare in person or seek that measurement from the seller if fit is a concern.
