The watch linked to Neil Armstrong was a vintage Douglas Skindiver Worldtimer, not the modern Wolbrook re-edition. Heritage Auctions said the manual-wind watch came from Armstrong’s brother Dean and included a certificate of authenticity signed by him. The record does not establish that Armstrong wore it on a particular flight or mission.
What was Neil Armstrong’s other watch?
It was a Douglas Skindiver Worldtimer, a vintage diver-style watch associated with Armstrong through a specific family-provenance claim. Heritage Auctions’ 2019 catalog described the watch as owned and worn by Armstrong and said it came from the personal collection of his brother, Dean Armstrong. Fratello likewise reports Dean as the source of the ownership story. That supports the connection to Armstrong, but not a claim that he wore this watch on an X-15 flight, in space, or on the Moon. Fratello’s account and Heritage’s lot record describe the story.
What the 2019 auction record establishes
Heritage Auctions sold the watch on May 10, 2019, for $6,875. The following details are from the auction lot description, not an independent examination of the watch:
- It had a black luminous dial marked “Douglas/ Shock Resistant/ France,” an arrow-style hour hand, a date window, and a world-time bezel.
- The movement was described as manual wind.
- The caseback engraving read: “Base Metal Bezel – Stainless Back – Antimagnetic – Tested Water Resistant 6 ATM.” This is a reported vintage inscription, not a current water-resistance test result.
- The lot was said to come from Dean Armstrong’s personal collection and included a certificate of authenticity signed by him. The catalog does not reproduce a statement from Dean.
Why the original Skindiver Worldtimer was distinctive
Wolbrook says it and sister brand Douglas introduced the Skindiver “Worldtimer” in the early 1960s. In the brand’s account, the design blended dive-watch legibility and water resistance with pilot-oriented features: luminous markers and hands, a prominent red sweep-seconds hand, a 24-hour scale, and a rotating bezel marked for world time zones and elapsed time. This is the manufacturer’s history of the model. Wolbrook’s Skindiver collection page presents the brand’s description.

How the modern Wolbrook re-edition differs
The current Wolbrook Skindiver WT Professional re-creates the design; it is not the specific watch in the Armstrong-family auction. The X-15 edition’s published specifications also differ from the vintage lot description:
| Detail | Auctioned Douglas watch | Current X-15 re-edition |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | Manual wind, according to Heritage Auctions’ 2019 lot description. | Automatic Citizen/Miyota 8315, according to Wolbrook’s product page. |
| Dimensions | Not stated in Heritage’s lot description. | 40 mm case diameter, 48 mm lug-to-lug, 13 mm thick, and 20 mm lug width, per Wolbrook. |
| Water resistance | Caseback was engraved “Tested Water Resistant 6 ATM,” as reported by Heritage; this does not establish its present condition. | Wolbrook rates it at 12 ATM/120 m. This is a manufacturer specification, not an independent test result in the cited material. |
| Other published details | Black luminous dial, date, world-time bezel, according to Heritage. | Wolbrook lists approximately 60 hours of power reserve, hacking seconds, a date, Hesalite crystal with internal date magnifier, 316L stainless steel case, screw-down crown, and unidirectional 120-click bezel. |
Wolbrook says the modern watch is assembled and tested in France and regulated to ±15 seconds per day; these are maker-published claims. Its X-15 configuration has a black dial, green C7 Super-LumiNova, black PVD-treated bezel, nylon-and-leather strap, and X-15 caseback engraving. The brand’s X-15 product page showed a price of $537 and an out-of-stock status when accessed in 2026; both price and availability can change, and other Professional configurations may differ. What to consider when comparing vintage and modern
- Provenance: The vintage watch’s appeal rests on the auctioned example’s reported connection to Armstrong and its chain through Dean’s collection. A re-edition recreates the design, not that provenance.
- Movement and upkeep: The auction described a manual-wind movement; the current X-15 uses an automatic Miyota 8315. The cited records do not establish the vintage watch’s present service condition.
- Fit: Wolbrook publishes modern dimensions, including a 20 mm lug width. Heritage’s lot description does not provide comparable dimensions for the vintage example.
- Water resistance: A vintage caseback inscription reported by an auction house and a current manufacturer rating are different kinds of evidence, not directly comparable test results.
- Price and availability: The $6,875 figure is the recorded 2019 auction result for one vintage watch; it is not a current market valuation. The modern X-15 page’s price and stock status are time-sensitive.
