The NOMOS Metro is offered with several different mechanical movements, so “Metro” alone does not tell you whether a watch is hand-wound or automatic. NOMOS lists hand-wound Alpha, DUW 4401 and DUW 4101 calibers in the family, alongside the automatic DUW 3001 in Metro neomatik models. Before buying, match the exact reference to its movement, winding method, complications and case specifications.
Which movements are used in the NOMOS Metro?
NOMOS identifies four caliber options across the Metro family. The distinction that matters first in everyday use is winding: Alpha, DUW 4401 and DUW 4101 are hand-wound; DUW 3001 is automatic and appears in Metro neomatik models. The family name does not identify a single shared movement, so check the reference’s product page or fact sheet rather than inferring the caliber from “Metro.”

Hand-wound models
A hand-wound Metro is wound at the crown. That routine is a feature for some owners and a recurring task for others: NOMOS describes the appeal this way, “Hand-wound watches offer the pleasure of regularly using the crown.” How often a particular watch needs winding depends on its use and the movement’s reserve; the cited caliber information gives maximum reserve figures for DUW 4101, but not a winding schedule for every Metro reference.

Automatic neomatik models
The DUW 3001 automatic caliber harnesses movement of the wearer’s wrist to wind the watch. NOMOS states a power reserve of up to 43 hours for the caliber; “up to” is the maker’s maximum specification, not a promise of the actual running time in every wearer’s circumstances. A watch that is not worn may stop once its available reserve is exhausted.
DUW 3001 vs. DUW 4101: what is the practical difference?
These movements suit different routines and model configurations. DUW 3001 is automatic and is the movement NOMOS names for Metro neomatik watches. DUW 4101 is hand-wound, includes a date, and is identified for the Metro 38 date. The manufacturer’s published dimensions and reserve figures are not directly interchangeable measures of overall watch size or performance: movement dimensions describe the caliber, while the case dimensions belong to a specific watch reference.

NOMOS’s listed DUW 3001 caliber is 3.2 mm high and 28.8 mm across, with up to 43 hours of reserve, 27 jewels and adjustment in six positions. DUW 4101 is listed as 2.8 mm high and 32.1 mm across, with up to 42 hours of reserve and 23 jewels. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative tests; they do not establish that one caliber is more accurate or durable than the other.
What do the reference-specific details tell you?
A Metro reference provides the context for interpreting a caliber listing. For example, NOMOS’s product page for the Metro neomatik midnight blue reference 1110 names DUW 3001 and describes the watch as automatic.

For a different example, the NOMOS fact sheet for Metro neomatik 39 reference 1113 lists a 38.5 mm case diameter, 8.4 mm case height, up to 5 atm water resistance, DUW 3001 and up to 43 hours’ reserve. Those are specifications for reference 1113—not dimensions or water resistance to assume for every Metro. The sheet is dated October 2024 and cautions that technical changes may occur; verify the current documentation for the reference you are considering: Metro neomatik 39 reference 1113 fact sheet.
What should you check before buying?
- Find the complete reference. Use the exact model name or reference number on the manufacturer’s product page or fact sheet; the Metro family name alone does not identify a caliber.
- Confirm the movement and winding method. Decide whether you prefer winding at the crown or the wrist-powered operation of an automatic, then verify the stated caliber for that reference.
- Check the complications and dial layout. Confirm whether that specific watch has a date, power-reserve display or another feature you want. DUW 4101 is identified with a date in the Metro 38 date; do not assume its specifications apply to models using Alpha or DUW 4401.
- Assess the case, not just the movement. Compare the reference’s case diameter and thickness with how you want the watch to sit and wear. Caliber dimensions do not substitute for case measurements.
- Review water resistance for the exact model. Use its current documentation to judge suitability for your intended wear; do not carry the 5 atm figure from reference 1113 over to another Metro.
What the published specifications can—and cannot—tell you
NOMOS’s pages provide caliber identities and technical specifications, and its reference documentation supplies model-level details. They do not provide an independent accuracy or reliability comparison among Metro movements, nor do the specifications establish current availability for every current or discontinued reference. For a purchase decision, the sound comparison is the exact watch’s stated movement, winding method, complications, case measurements and water resistance—not a ranking of calibers unsupported by comparative testing.
