The model’s history reaches back to a 1982 chronograph, while four limited reissues reported in 2026 reinterpret the look with larger cases and a different movement architecture. They are related generations, not identical watches.
What makes the Sport Classic Chronograph “old school”?
Ebel introduced the Sport Classique in 1977, with the wave bracelet as its signature. The chronograph followed in 1982. Phillips’ catalogue essay says Ebel turned to Zenith for El Primero chronograph movements that Zenith had stopped producing but still had in stock. Phillips’ catalogue record documents that history.
The design’s appeal is not just its age: the bracelet is part of the watch’s identity rather than a generic strap alternative. But “vintage Sport Classic Chronograph” does not describe one uniform specification. References, materials, dials and movements can differ, so identify the individual watch rather than assuming every example matches the best-known descriptions.
What does a documented vintage example tell us?
One specific example in Phillips’ catalogue is reference 8134901, dated 1993. It has a 38 mm 18k yellow-gold case, a blue mother-of-pearl dial and an automatic caliber 400. The catalogue records a sale result of CHF 9,525 for that watch. That is one historical auction result—not a typical value, current asking price or estimate for other references.

When evaluating another vintage example, check its reference and configuration against reliable documentation. The dial, case material, caliber and condition need to be assessed individually; the 1993 watch is evidence of one configuration, not a template for the whole range.
What changed in the 2026 limited reissues?
Fratello’s October 7, 2026 hands-on report describes four references, each limited to 115 pieces for Ebel’s 115th anniversary. It reports these configurations:

Reissue dimensions and features
- 40 mm case diameter, 11.6 mm thick and 44.5 mm lug-to-lug.
- Sapphire crystal and a screw-in caseback with sapphire display window.
- Water resistance rated to 5 bar (50 m).
- Time display, small seconds, chronograph with central seconds and 30-minute and 12-hour registers, plus a tachymeter scale.
A different chronograph movement
The 2026 watches use an automatic Sellita SW300-1 base with a Dubois Dépraz DD2222 chronograph module, according to Fratello. The reported specifications are 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and a 42-hour power reserve. This modular architecture is not the integrated El Primero movement described in the vintage history; the two generations should not be conflated.

How do the vintage and reissue watches wear differently?
In Fratello’s hands-on comparison, the vintage watch has a more angular character, while the new case is rounder and 2 mm larger. The reviewer also describes the modern bracelet as sturdier, with larger links, but less flexible than the older bracelet. These are the author’s observations from the watches handled, not universal findings about every vintage example or a laboratory comparison.
That distinction matters when choosing between them. The vintage watch offers the period form and the character of an older individual piece; the reissue provides a contemporary interpretation with newly specified dimensions and movement. A preference for one bracelet feel or case shape is personal, and condition can substantially affect the experience of a vintage watch.

What should you check before buying?
For a vintage example
- Confirm the reference and whether the dial, case and movement configuration correspond to documentation.
- Ask for clear photographs and seller documentation, including any evidence of originality or replaced parts.
- Review service records and have condition assessed by a qualified watchmaker; age alone does not establish service needs or costs.
- Consider the specific watch’s condition and provenance rather than treating the Phillips result for one 1993 example as a market benchmark.
For a 2026 reissue
- Verify the exact reference, dial and material combination before purchase.
- Check current stock and regional price with the seller; the reported EUR figures are publication-date launch prices, not a guarantee of availability or present pricing.
- Use Ebel after-sales service or a qualified watchmaker for reference-specific operating and service advice. Generic Ebel chronograph instructions may cover quartz models and do not establish procedures for these automatic reissues.
Ebel’s official catalogue also lists Sport Classic watches that are not chronographs. For example, its pages describe reference 1216708 as a 37 mm steel automatic with date and three hands, and reference 1216696 as a 42 mm two-tone automatic. Those models should not be mistaken for the four chronograph reissues. Ebel’s official site provides product and support resources.
