The Omega Seamaster Calendar ref. 2627-7SC is an early-1950s dress-oriented automatic watch with a date at 6 o’clock. Its historical interest lies in that combination: it belongs to the Seamaster family’s first years and predates the line’s later association with professional diving. Omega’s archive places the KO 2627 in its 1952 collection and records caliber 353; details such as the 2627-7SC suffix and 18 mm strap come from specific examples, not a universal specification for every ref. 2627.

What is the Omega Seamaster Calendar ref. 2627-7SC?

It is a vintage Seamaster Calendar from a period when the model line was not yet defined chiefly by dive watches. Omega’s archive lists the KO 2627 in its 1952 international collection. Christie’s and Fratello describe ref. 2627 as introduced in 1952 and as Omega’s first watch with a date window. The early Seamaster family itself dates to 1948.

The “-7SC” designation is documented in a dealer listing for one example, identified there as model 2627-7 SC. It should not be treated as a label that makes every dial, case or movement combination interchangeable. When assessing a particular watch, compare its case reference and material, dial and date aperture, movement caliber and serial number, and condition.

What movement does the 2627 use?

Omega’s KO 2627 archive entry specifies an automatic mechanical caliber 353. Fratello’s 2021 account describes that caliber as a 17-jewel bumper automatic with approximately 42 hours of power reserve. Christie’s describes the rotor’s back-and-forth motion. These movement details come from the secondary sources, rather than the level of detail in Omega’s archive entry.

How a bumper automatic works

A bumper rotor travels through a limited arc rather than rotating freely through a full circle. It moves back and forth and rebounds from springs, giving the movement a different winding action from the full-rotor automatics familiar in many later watches. The mechanism is a distinctive period feature, but its presence alone does not establish a watch’s service condition or accuracy.

How did the date window change?

The date sits at 6 o’clock, keeping the dial visually balanced. Fratello reports that early 1952 examples used a square aperture and that Omega changed it to a trapezoidal opening from 1953. Christie’s likewise describes a transition from rectangular to trapezoidal. The aperture is a useful clue when comparing examples, not proof of a specific production date or of originality.

That variety makes it important to evaluate a watch as an individual object: dial details should be considered alongside its case, movement, and documentation rather than used alone to certify originality.

What are the case size and materials?

Omega’s KO 2627 archive entry lists gold-cap on stainless steel, a screw-in case, and a water-resistance rating of 3 bar (30 m / 100 ft). Those are model-level archival specifications; they do not establish the condition of a decades-old watch or its seals today.

Source and scope Published dimensions What the figure describes
Fratello, ref. 2627 35.3 mm case width; 42.6 mm lug-to-lug Reference-level dimensions reported in its account.
Omega Enthusiast Ltd, one 2627-7SC listing 35.3 mm case; 43 mm lug-to-lug Dimensions of that particular dealer-listed example.

The small difference in published lug-to-lug figures is a reason to check the actual watch before deciding how it will wear. Case wear, polishing and lug geometry can also affect its appearance on the wrist.

What strap fits the 2627-7SC?

Omega Enthusiast Ltd lists an 18 mm strap for one 2627-7SC example. That is a useful reference point, not a guaranteed fit for every watch carrying a 2627 designation. Measure the distance between the lugs on the specific watch before choosing an 18 mm leather watch strap; confirm the listing’s stated width directly if using that example as a comparison.

What should you check when considering one?

A reference number and a watch that runs are not enough to establish originality, accuracy, recent service, or present-day water resistance. A qualified vintage-watch professional can assess the individual watch’s components and condition.

  • Case: Check the case reference and material, signs of polishing, and whether the lugs retain their shape.
  • Dial and date: Compare the date aperture, dial layout, texture and indexes; treat visual clues as part of the assessment, not conclusive authentication.
  • Movement: Confirm the caliber and serial number and have the mechanism’s condition evaluated.
  • Service and operation: Ask for service documentation and a current condition assessment. Christie’s reported that its particular auction watch was working when catalogued but had not been tested for accuracy and was recommended for service; that note applies to that lot only.
  • Fit: Verify the actual lug width and dimensions of the watch you are considering.

Why the 2627-7SC matters

The ref. 2627 captures a transitional chapter in the Seamaster story: a relatively restrained calendar watch from the early years of a collection that would later become strongly associated with diving. Its date display and bumper automatic movement make it historically distinctive, while its variations in dial and case execution call for careful, example-by-example identification.
