How many steel Apollo 11 anniversary watches were made?
OMEGA lists the steel model as a 6,969-piece limited production. That count belongs to the steel reference; it is not the production total for every Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Speedmaster.
Steel versus the 18K gold anniversary edition
The anniversary name covers two distinct watches. The steel reference has a stainless-steel case and bracelet with Moonshine gold details. The separate gold edition is made in an exclusive 18K gold alloy and was limited to 1,014 pieces, according to the Swatch Group’s 2019 archive.

Why the watch commemorates Apollo 11
OMEGA says NASA qualified the Speedmaster on 1 March 1965 with the designation “Flight Qualified for all Manned Space Missions.” Its Apollo 17 anniversary article describes the Speedmaster as official kit on successful Apollo journeys from Apollo 11 in 1969 through Apollo 17 in 1972. That history explains the commemorative theme; it does not mean this 2019 anniversary model was the watch worn on those missions.

In a retrospective, NASA engineer James Ragan, whom OMEGA identifies as the engineer who qualified the Speedmaster, explained the practical role of the watch: “The watch was a backup. If the astronauts lost the capability of talking to the ground, or the capability of their digital timers on the lunar surface, then the only thing they had to rely on was the OMEGA watch they had on their wrist. It needed to be there for them if they had a problem.” The quotation appears in the Swatch Group’s 2019 archive.
