The 2016 Omega Speedmaster Grey Side of the Moon “Meteorite” pairs a dark-grey ceramic case with a genuine Gibeon meteorite dial and Sedna gold details. Its appeal is the contrast between the dial’s naturally formed pattern and the modern, substantial ceramic chronograph around it. This is a review of reference 311.63.44.51.99.001—not the separate Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite introduced in 2025.
What is the Grey Side of the Moon Meteorite?
Reference 311.63.44.51.99.001 is a 2016 Speedmaster chronograph with a grey ceramic case, meteorite dial and Sedna gold bezel, hands and applied hour markers. Omega’s Japan product page identifies the meteorite-dial version and the reference, while SJX’s contemporary review identifies its dial material as Gibeon meteorite from Namibia.
The meteorite is iron, and its distinctive Widmanstätten pattern is brought out by acid etching. Its striations arise from the material itself, so the dial has natural variation rather than a mechanically repeated motif. The result is an unusual mix: a dark, engineered-looking ceramic exterior framing a surface formed beyond Earth.
How does it look and wear?
Material contrast is the point
The grey ceramic, meteorite and Sedna gold create three distinct visual registers: a muted case, a textured metallic dial and warm accents. In 2016, watch journalist Justin Mastine-Frost wrote in Time+Tide that the watch was one of the models that won him over in person after he had been unimpressed by press images. He praised the combination of meteorite, grey ceramic and Sedna gold. That is a contemporaneous reviewer’s impression, not a claim of independent wear testing here.

- Model 310.32.42.50.01.001
Large dimensions to consider
SJX gives the case diameter as 44.24 mm. The 1916 Company’s 2024 video description rounds the diameter to 44.25 mm and lists a thickness of 16.5 mm and a lug-to-lug span of 50 mm. Those figures indicate a broad, thick watch with a long footprint; buyers should compare all three dimensions with a watch they already know fits them. The slight diameter difference is rounding between sources.
The available material does not establish a controlled comfort or legibility comparison. The dark case and dial, gold details, and busy chronograph layout are visible design choices, but whether their contrast works well for a particular wearer is best judged in person.

- Stainless steel case
- Black dial
- Swiss-automatic movement
- Case diameter: 40mm
- Water resistant to 330 feet
What movement and chronograph does it use?
The watch uses Omega calibre 9300, an automatic Co-Axial chronograph movement. Omega’s Japan product information lists a 60-hour power reserve and 4 Hz frequency. SJX describes the movement architecture as a column wheel and vertical clutch, with a silicon hairspring and Co-Axial escapement.
Its chronograph hours and minutes share a counter at 9 o’clock, keeping elapsed time readable on one subdial rather than splitting those indications between two. The hour hand can also be adjusted independently, a practical feature for changing time zones without resetting the minutes.
Rank #3
- Rubber
- Rotating bezel, gmt
- Automatic-self-wind movement
- Case diameter: 40mm
- Water resistant to 330 feet
This reference should not be described as Master Chronometer-certified. SJX notes that calibre 9300 predates Omega’s later 15,000-gauss Master Co-Axial generation; the cited material does not establish Master Chronometer certification for this watch.
Is this the same as Omega’s 2025 Meteorite Speedmaster?
No. The shared “Meteorite” name can cause confusion, but the 2016 Grey Side of the Moon Meteorite and the Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite announced by Omega in January 2025 are distinct models. The 2025 watch adds moonphase displays and uses a different movement. Omega’s 2025 announcement also covers a broader Dark/Grey Side collection evolution, including other models and calibres; those updates should not be assumed to apply to this 2016 reference.
For a meaningful comparison, distinguish dial material and layout, case dimensions, movement generation and certification, strap and clasp, and price at a specific date and condition. The available sources establish the 2016 model’s material, dimensions and movement details, but do not provide controlled legibility or comfort testing or comparable current-market prices.

Verdict
The 2016 Grey Side of the Moon Meteorite is best understood as a large, material-led Speedmaster: real Gibeon meteorite supplies the individuality, while ceramic and Sedna gold give it a deliberate, high-contrast setting. Its calibre 9300 brings a sophisticated column-wheel, vertical-clutch chronograph and a useful independently adjustable hour hand. The substantial dimensions and non-certified movement generation are important distinctions for prospective buyers, as is the fact that this is not the later Moonphase Meteorite.
