The Omega Speedmaster HB-SIA Solar Impulse is a discontinued, numbered watch family linked to OMEGA’s partnership with the Solar Impulse project. There are two distinct references to know: the 2008 GMT model, reference 321.90.44.52.01.001, and the numbered GMT chronograph, reference 321.92.44.52.01.003. They are not interchangeable descriptions of one watch.

What is the Omega Speedmaster HB-SIA Solar Impulse?

OMEGA says it was a main partner of Solar Impulse, providing technology and watches worn by the crew. The HB-SIA watch was named for the project’s prototype aircraft, and its design drew on the plane’s materials. OMEGA connects the titanium case and black carbon-fibre dial to the aircraft’s construction; the project completed the first solar-powered circumnavigation of Earth in 2016. OMEGA’s historical page provides the project context and documents the 2008 GMT model.

Which HB-SIA references are documented?

OMEGA’s records describe two references with different complications and configurations. Check the reference number rather than relying on the HB-SIA or Solar Impulse name alone.

Reference Documented details Availability
321.90.44.52.01.001 OMEGA’s historical page identifies this as the 2008 GMT model. It lists a 44.25 mm titanium case and bracelet, black dial, sapphire crystal, and central 24-hour GMT hand. OMEGA also notes that a specially designed rubber strap was offered. OMEGA historical product page Not stated by OMEGA on the cited historical page.
321.92.44.52.01.003 OMEGA describes this numbered Co-Axial GMT chronograph with a 44.25 mm titanium case, black carbon-fibre dial, orange rubber strap, tachymeter bezel, and calibre 3603. It combines chronograph and GMT functions. OMEGA product page OMEGA marks the model no longer available.

How the two models differ

321.90.44.52.01.001: GMT

The 2008 reference is the GMT-only model in OMEGA’s historical description. Its central 24-hour hand provides the additional time-zone indication; the cited listing does not describe a chronograph function.

321.92.44.52.01.003: GMT chronograph

The numbered variant adds chronograph functionality to the GMT display and has a tachymeter scale. OMEGA specifies calibre 3603, a black carbon-fibre dial, and an orange rubber strap. Do not transfer those details to the 2008 GMT reference without checking the individual watch.

What do auction records say about value?

Two dated auction records offer examples, not a current valuation or market average. They concern different watches and use different kinds of price evidence.

  • Antiquorum, May 7, 2022: Lot 59, reference 321.92.44.52.01.003, sold for CHF 8,250. The catalog gave an estimate of CHF 2,000–4,000 and described a 44 mm example on rubber with a titanium deployant clasp. This is a realized result for that lot, not a current appraisal. Antiquorum lot record
  • Sotheby’s, 2026 listing: Lot 39 was a circa-2013 HB-SIA titanium automatic chronograph GMT cataloged from the Buzz Aldrin Family Trust, with a USD 6,000–9,000 estimate. The listing states that the auction is closed; an estimate is not a sale result. Sotheby’s cataloged that bracelet example as 41 mm. Sotheby’s auction listing

What to check when considering an example

Listings and auction descriptions do not always give the same measurements or configuration. For example, Antiquorum cataloged its specimen as 44 mm, while Sotheby’s gave 41 mm for its circa-2013 bracelet example. Treat these as measurements of the cataloged watches, not proof that one figure applies to every HB-SIA. Verify the specific watch and its reference.

Quick Recap

Bestseller No. 1
  • Confirm the reference number and whether the watch is GMT-only or a GMT chronograph.
  • Compare the dial, bezel, strap or bracelet, and clasp with documentation for that reference; configurations should not be assumed to fit across references.
  • Ask for clear evidence of condition, provenance, and any included box and papers.
  • Keep an auction estimate separate from a realized price, and treat any old result as historical rather than a current quote.
  • Because the numbered chronograph is marked no longer available by OMEGA, check current stock and authenticity with any seller; the cited sources do not establish present availability elsewhere.
