The Omega Speedmaster X-33 Marstimer is a quartz watch built around a distinctive question: what time is it on Mars? Its Mars Time Coordinated (MTC) function tracks the sol date and time at the planet’s prime meridian, while a solar compass is designed to find true north on Earth and Mars. Announced in September 2022 with the European Space Agency, it also carries familiar X-33 mission timing functions. “Ready to blast off” is a fitting bit of space-watch theatre, not evidence that this consumer model is qualified for a crewed Mars mission.
What does the X-33 Marstimer do?
The Marstimer’s defining feature is MTC: Omega says it tracks Mars’ sol date and time at the planet’s prime meridian. A sol is a Martian solar day. Omega’s 2022 launch announcement says a day on Mars is 39 minutes longer than an Earth day; the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry repeated that rounded comparison in October 2022. Treat it as the published comparison, not a precision measurement of the watch’s accuracy.
The other Mars-oriented feature is a solar compass intended to find true north on Earth and Mars. The watch also retains mission functions associated with the Skywalker X-33 line:
- MET: Mission Elapsed Time.
- PET: Phase Elapsed Time.
- Alarms and a perpetual calendar.
These features are described in Omega’s 28 September 2022 launch announcement. Omega President and CEO Raynald Aeschlimann summed up the watch’s appeal there: “Anyone interested in space, or even science fiction, is obsessed with Mars.”

Is it really ready for a Mars mission?
Omega said the watch was developed to assist people working in space research. The launch description also says the caseback bears the wording “ESA TESTED AND QUALIFIED.” That wording should be understood as the product description presents it: it does not establish that this exact consumer watch is flight-qualified for a crewed Mars mission.
Movement and published specifications
Omega identifies the movement as calibre 5622, a high-precision, thermo-compensated quartz movement that handles both analogue and digital functions. The following dimensions and technical details come from Omega’s regional Japanese product page for reference 318.90.45.79.01.003; they are published specifications, not independently tested results.

Fit, strap and everyday ownership
The 45 mm case and 48.50 mm lug-to-lug length are useful measurements to compare with a watch that already fits you. Case diameter alone does not tell the whole story: the lug-to-lug dimension helps indicate how much wrist space the case spans, while the 14.89 mm thickness gives a sense of its height.

Omega says a dedicated NATO strap and strap-changing tool are included in the watch’s special roll. The listed 20 mm lug width is a helpful starting point when considering another strap, but check compatibility with the specific replacement strap before buying. The published water-resistance rating is 3 bar (30 m / 100 ft); it should not be read as a claim that the watch is suitable for every water activity.
Omega lists a CR2320 battery and a stated 24-month battery life. The product information cited here does not explain the battery replacement procedure, so it is not a basis for recommending owner replacement or a particular service route.

What the Marstimer is—and is not
Compared with a conventional quartz watch, the Marstimer’s distinguishing proposition is not simply space-themed styling: it combines Mars sol timing and a solar compass with X-33 mission functions. Its trade-offs are equally concrete: a 45 mm titanium case, 3 bar water resistance, and a battery-powered movement. Omega’s listed features make it a specialized instrument for people drawn to space research and the X-33 concept; they do not, by themselves, demonstrate performance in a Mars mission environment.
For a comparison with another X-33 or space-oriented watch, focus on whether it offers Mars-specific timing, a solar compass and mission timing, then compare movement type, case fit, water resistance and battery information. Current price and stock are not established by the cited sources. Check availability and pricing for your own country rather than treating the Japanese product listing as global.
