Omega’s Spirate-equipped Speedmaster Super Racing carries a stated precision range of 0 to +2 seconds per day. Rolex specifies −2 to +2 seconds per day for a finished Superlative Chronometer. That makes “Omega ousts Rolex” a provocative headline, not a conclusion these figures prove: both ranges allow a maximum absolute deviation of two seconds per day, but only Omega’s range excludes daily loss. The brands’ cited figures also do not come with evidence of a shared test protocol or a head-to-head comparison.

Both brands’ published ranges have a maximum absolute deviation of two seconds per day. Omega’s is asymmetric, while Rolex’s is symmetric. The range alone therefore does not show that an Omega watch will keep better time in actual wear, or that the brands were measured under identical conditions. Neither source supplies independent head-to-head results or long-term wear data.
Rolex also gives a separate −4/+6 seconds-per-day tolerance for movement-only chronometer testing. That is not the finished-watch Superlative Chronometer specification and should not be compared with Omega’s 0/+2 figure as if both described the same stage of testing. Rolex’s precision explanation distinguishes the two.
What the Spirate System is
Spirate is a fine-regulation mechanism, not an add-on a watch owner installs. Omega describes it as a way for a watchmaker to adjust the stiffness at the balance spring’s attachment point using an eccentric adjustment mechanism on the balance bridge. The new Si14 silicon balance spring and that adjustment architecture are intended to enable finer rate adjustment than the brand’s previous approach. Omega’s announcement describes the system and its stated precision.

Swatch Group says each silicon spiral is produced from a silicon wafer using an internal process called DRIE, or Deep Reactive Ion Etching. The mechanism is visible through the sapphire caseback of the watch it first appeared in. Swatch Group’s launch account gives these construction details.
Which watch has Spirate?
The first publicly identified implementation is the Omega Speedmaster Super Racing, powered by Co-Axial Master Chronometer calibre 9920. Swatch Group says the calibre is Master Chronometer certified by METAS, the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology, and describes an overall certification process of eight tests over ten days, comprising 283 steps. That certification context should not be mistaken for documentation of a separate METAS test of the exact 0/+2 rate claim. Omega attributes that figure to its own 26 January 2023 announcement; the cited launch material does not explain a distinct test protocol for it. Swatch Group’s 2023 announcement described a step-by-step plan to introduce Spirate into other calibres. That was a future intention at the time, not confirmation of later deployment. The Speedmaster Super Racing remains the first model identified in the cited launch material; those sources do not establish current use across Omega’s wider lineup or current stock and pricing.

How to interpret the “ousts Rolex” claim
- For the narrow stated range: Omega’s 0/+2 allows no daily loss, whereas Rolex’s −2/+2 allows deviation in either direction.
- For maximum absolute deviation: both stated ranges extend two seconds per day from zero.
- For real-world accuracy: the specifications alone cannot rank the brands. The cited materials do not establish a common protocol, independent comparison, or long-term wear results.
- For the technology: Spirate is a notable Omega regulation mechanism and the basis of the brand’s 2023 claim, but the claim does not establish a categorical victory over Rolex.
