The Nubeo Black Mamba is a large, self-winding chronograph collection created with Kobe Bryant and named for his nickname. Its defining physical feature is a layered case that pairs a ceramic shell with a Grade 5 titanium inner chassis, while jeweled Ultimate and MVP versions extend the design into luxury-jewelry territory. The details below describe the watches from launch-era documentation, not a firsthand inspection.
What the Nubeo Black Mamba is
Nubeo presented the Black Mamba as a collaboration with Bryant, with contemporary reports saying the collection was to be unveiled at Baselworld in 2009. The base watch is an automatic chronograph with a date display, built around a bold 48 mm case. Its scale and material mix make it less like a conventional dress chronograph than a deliberately technical, sculptural sports watch.
Two references appear in the historical coverage: Master Horologer describes the technical base watch as NUB06151050L, while Gressive’s 2009 Basel report identifies NUB06228050L. These should not be treated as interchangeable reference numbers; the sources do not establish that they designate the same configuration.
How the case and bracelet are constructed
The technical description counts 131 components in the case, excluding the movement, dial and bracelet. The outer case is ceramic, surrounding an inner Grade 5 titanium chassis. Titanium components receive a DLC (diamond-like carbon) treatment, and a rubber ring sits in the bezel. Gressive also describes ceramic and DLC-finished Grade 5 titanium in its account of reference NUB06228050L.

The bracelet continues the watch’s industrial look rather than using a standard-looking strap attachment. The technical article describes turbine-like fixtures where it meets the case and resin inserts in a 3D scale-pattern rubber bracelet. That documented construction is a useful clue for identifying the design, but no compatible replacement bracelet or current parts source was established.
On the front, the watch has a flat anti-reflective sapphire crystal. The dial combines chronograph counters, small seconds and a date display. These are specifications reported in the technical article, not observations from handling an example.

The collection was not a single configuration. Historical reporting distinguishes a base edition from more elaborate jeweled models, and the published counts refer to different scopes.

The 810-piece base count and the broader 1,074-watch line total can coexist because they describe different scopes. The available accounts do not supply a complete authoritative catalogue of every colorway and reference, so a variant should be identified by its actual reference and documented configuration rather than by the collection name alone.

What launch-era prices tell us—and what they do not
Contemporary reports give substantially different launch-era figures, apparently covering different variants or scopes. Professional Watches reported a $25,000 starting price in 2009. SportsBusiness Journal, relaying Wall Street Journal reporting in March 2009, gave a $21,000–$285,000 range for the limited-edition line. Gressive’s August 2009 listing projected ¥2,625,000 including tax for reference NUB06228050L and described the release as planned for late 2009.
These are historical launch reports, not present-day asking prices or appraisals. Their differences are not resolved by the reporting, and none establishes current resale value or availability.

How to assess a Black Mamba offered for sale
Because the references and variants differ, a listing that says only “Kobe Bryant Black Mamba watch” does not establish which watch is being offered. Before relying on a seller’s description, ask for information that lets you compare the physical watch with the specific claimed version.
- Confirm the reference. Ask for clear photographs of identifying markings and documentation. The two references reported in the historical sources are NUB06151050L and NUB06228050L; do not assume one is a typo for the other.
- Establish the variant. Request the stated edition, gem treatment and colorway, then compare them with the seller’s supporting paperwork and the version being claimed.
- Inspect condition and provenance. Ask about service history, included documentation, and any replaced or damaged case, bracelet or gem components. Have a qualified watch specialist assess the particular example if the purchase warrants it.
- Verify the seller and price independently. The launch prices above cannot validate a current asking price, and no current listing or resale benchmark is established here.
- Check serviceability before committing. Ask a specialist or the seller to identify a confirmed source for any needed bracelet or parts; compatibility and present availability are not established by the historical descriptions.
Why the Bryant connection matters
The collection’s name refers directly to Bryant’s “Black Mamba” nickname, and contemporaneous coverage presented it as a collaboration rather than merely a watch carrying his name. SportsBusiness Journal, reporting on a Wall Street Journal account, attributed this statement to Bryant: “I don’t do deals or partnerships where I don’t get thoroughly involved.” The quote is evidence of how the partnership was described at launch; it does not independently document his role in designing any particular component.
