Choose an onyx dial if you want polished natural stone, with the possibility of subtle geological variation. Choose lacquer if you prefer a manufactured finish whose depth and gloss come from how the maker applies and polishes it. Both can look like deep, glossy black; neither is proven universally more durable. Check the material specified for the exact watch reference, then judge its legibility, construction and care requirements.
What distinguishes onyx from lacquer?
Onyx is natural stone
An onyx dial is cut and shaped from stone. Girard-Perregaux describes selecting stone plates, cutting and thinning them, then polishing them to a mirror-like finish. Its account says its process takes at least 15 operations and reduces material from about 4 mm to 0.4 mm. These figures describe that maker’s process, not a standard for every onyx dial. Girard-Perregaux’s account of onyx also describes eight weeks of chemical treatment and more than a week of vacuum drying; the page does not state a publication year.

Because it is natural stone, onyx can have individual characteristics. Rolex says geological processes create distinctive patterns and irregularities in natural-stone dials, and that it selects stone sections for their patterns. That does not mean every onyx dial will have conspicuous veining or visible patterning. Rolex’s natural-stone dial explanation names onyx among the materials it uses.
Lacquer is an applied finish
A lacquer dial is made by applying a finish to a dial base. The term does not describe one universal recipe: makers use different bases, application methods, layers and polishing steps. Seiko describes black Urushi lacquer hand-painted onto a metal base, then dried and polished repeatedly to build depth. NOMOS describes applying layers of lacquer to a dial blank and allowing each coat to dry. Rolex describes a separate process for its own dials, involving a brass base prepared with gold and nickel layers, followed by lacquer applied by robotic airbrush in a controlled environment. These are maker-specific examples, not interchangeable definitions.

Seiko Watch Corporation describes its Urushi dial as “created by applying multiple layers of lacquer made from the sap of the Urushi tree” and says it has a glossy, deep black color. Its Presage craftsmanship page presents this as descriptive product information, not a claim about comparative durability. NOMOS explains its approach on its page about mechanical watches with black dials; Rolex’s process is described in its lacquered-dial feature.
How do the dials look on a watch?
Both materials can produce a glossy, deep-black appearance. Girard-Perregaux describes a mirror effect on its polished onyx, while Seiko describes the depth and gloss of its black Urushi lacquer. These are examples from particular makers, not a reliable visual test for identifying the material. Onyx may show natural variation; lacquer’s appearance depends on its base and finishing process.

A shiny black dial in a product photo does not establish whether it is onyx or lacquer. Check the specification for the exact reference and make sure it identifies the dial material, not another component. For example, CHANEL lists the Première H7022 as having a black lacquer dial and separately identifies an onyx cabochon on the crown. Its product page illustrates why component-level descriptions matter.
Is onyx or lacquer more durable?
The available evidence does not establish a universal durability winner or comparative everyday-wear failure rates. Plus Ultra AG’s November 18, 2021 comparison says onyx is more vulnerable to physical impact and lacquer to chemical or environmental exposure; it also claims polished onyx retains its appearance over time. These are supplier assertions, not an independent head-to-head test, an industry standard or a guarantee for every watch. The maker descriptions above explain materials and processes but do not establish how often either type of dial fails in everyday use. Read Plus Ultra AG’s comparison with those limits in mind.

For a purchase, evaluate the complete watch rather than relying on broad claims about dial material: its construction, crystal, case, dial design, service support and the manufacturer’s care instructions all matter. Follow the maker’s guidance; for handling, cleaning or repair questions it does not cover, ask a qualified watchmaker to assess the specific watch.

How to choose the right black dial for you
- Start with the material. Onyx is natural stone; lacquer is an applied finish. Ask the seller or brand to confirm the material on the exact reference.
- Decide which appearance you prefer. Look for natural variation if that appeals to you, but do not assume every onyx dial will show a prominent pattern. For lacquer, compare examples from the maker because finishes and processes differ.
- Check legibility on the actual watch. Assess the contrast between hands, indices and dial in person or in reliable images taken under more than one lighting condition. The sources do not establish a general legibility advantage for either material.
- Consider the whole watch and its support. Compare movement, case, service options and the care guidance for the model. The examples below show that both dial types exist, but do not establish a market-wide price or value ranking.
Examples from watchmakers
- Onyx: Girard-Perregaux describes black onyx dials in its Infinity editions and outlines its production process. Check with the brand or an authorized retailer for current model availability.
- Lacquer: CHANEL specifies a black lacquer dial on the Première H7022, with onyx used separately for its crown cabochon.
- Urushi lacquer: Seiko documents black Urushi lacquer dials in its Presage craftsmanship information. Confirm the exact reference and current availability before considering a specific model.
