But for Frank Geelen, who owns a first-generation Big Pilot, the traditional size, date and power-reserve display are part of what makes the watch a Big Pilot. He likes the BP43’s execution; he is less convinced by its claim to the name.
What changed with the Big Pilot’s Watch 43?
IWC announced the Big Pilot’s Watch 43 on 7 April 2021 as a smaller interpretation added to the family. It is a 43 mm stainless-steel automatic watch with a three-hand dial, no date window and no power-reserve indicator. IWC’s launch release framed the pared-back layout as a return to the purity of an observation watch design.
The blue-dial reference IW329303 is listed by IWC UK with a 13.6 mm height, 10-bar water resistance, screw-in crown, sapphire display back, 21 mm strap width and in-house caliber 82100. IWC specifies a 60-hour power reserve. The same UK page displayed a price of £7,900 including VAT on 8 October 2026; that is a dated UK listing, not a universal or permanent price. How does it compare with the traditional Big Pilot?
| What changes | Big Pilot’s Watch 43 | Traditional large Big Pilot |
|---|---|---|
| Case diameter | 43 mm, according to IWC’s 2021 launch release | 46.2 mm, as described by Frank Geelen in his comparison |
| Dial information | Three hands; no date or power-reserve display | Earlier large references are associated with a date and power-reserve display |
| Character | A smaller, simpler and more adaptable member of the family | Greater wrist presence and the traditional display features that Geelen associates with the Big Pilot identity |
This is not simply a choice between a better and worse watch. The question is which traits define the Big Pilot for you: its aviation-inspired design language, or its imposing scale and signature dial indications.

What does the fan think of the BP43?
In his 15 July 2021 opinion for Monochrome Watches, Frank Geelen writes as an owner of a first-generation Big Pilot IW5002-01. He praises the BP43’s solid-feeling case, finishing, neat assembly, clear dial, water-resistance rating and ease of changing straps and bracelet. These are his personal impressions, not independent measurements.
His reservation is about identity, not a defect in construction. To Geelen, a smaller case without the traditional date and power-reserve display does not feel like a “Big Pilot.” He sees the BP43 as a more daily-oriented, accessible addition to the family—not a replacement for the larger model. That is one owner’s view, not a consensus among collectors. Monochrome Watches: Frank Geelen’s opinion on the Big Pilot’s Watch 43

Is the smaller case more wearable?
The 43 mm diameter is 3.2 mm smaller than the 46.2 mm large Big Pilot Geelen describes. That difference offers a plausible reason to choose the BP43 if the older model’s scale is a concern, but case diameter alone cannot guarantee fit: wrist shape, lug geometry and personal preference matter too.
Lex Stolk’s 23 May 2021 Fratello hands-on article also emphasizes more practical wearability compared with the 46.2 mm model. Stolk describes trying the leather strap and bracelet and prefers the calf-leather strap. That is an individual wearing impression, not a fit guarantee for every wrist. Which versions and strap options were introduced?
IWC’s initial steel lineup included three configurations:
| Reference | Dial and hands | Supplied strap or bracelet |
|---|---|---|
| IW329301 | Black dial, rhodium-plated hands | Brown calfskin strap |
| IW329303 | Blue dial, rhodium-plated hands | Blue calfskin strap |
| IW329304 | Blue dial, rhodium-plated hands | Stainless-steel bracelet |
The launch materials also identify rubber straps and a steel bracelet with IWC’s EasX-CHANGE system. Geelen specifically appreciates how easily the strap and bracelet can be changed. The cited specifications establish IWC-supported options, but do not establish compatibility with third-party straps.

Does the BP43 still feel like a Big Pilot?
IWC’s creative director, Christian Knoop, described the BP43 as a return to the “extreme purity” of the original observation watch, with a simple three-hand dial. CEO Christoph Grainger-Herr characterized the Big Pilot as a functional design that became a cultural icon. These are brand statements that explain IWC’s intent; they do not settle whether the smaller watch preserves the identity that longtime owners value.
Geelen’s take makes the distinction clear: if the name means the distinctive aviation-inspired look, the BP43 retains much of the family language. If it means large scale plus a date and power-reserve display, the 43 mm model leaves out important parts of the formula. The BP43’s appeal depends on which definition matters more to you.

What the specifications and price do—and don’t—tell you
IWC’s launch announcement lists 43 mm diameter, a 60-hour power reserve and 10-bar water resistance, and describes around 100 qualification tests conducted over several months. That test count is the manufacturer’s account of its own qualification work, not a comparative industry measure. The official figures establish the watch’s stated specifications; they cannot answer the more subjective question of whether its proportions or identity work for a particular wearer.
If the question is “Is this watch overpriced?”, the available price reference needs a market and date: IWC UK listed the blue IW329303 at £7,900 including VAT on 8 October 2026. That one regional listing does not establish prices in other countries, later pricing, or value against the second-hand market.
