Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona 6239 has the strongest auction trail here; other examples range from an Elvis Presley-owned Omega sold at auction to watches associated with stars through style coverage or film and brand partnerships. Those distinctions matter to collectors—and to anyone considering a purchase.
What counts as celebrity provenance?
Celebrity provenance is the evidence connecting a particular watch to a particular person. A named auction lot with a documented ownership history is stronger evidence of personal ownership than a photograph of someone wearing a similar model. An overview that associates a celebrity with a watch model is useful context, but it does not establish that the person owned the specific watch being offered for sale.

- Documented personal ownership: an auction house or other credible record identifies a specific watch as belonging to the celebrity.
- On-screen association: a watch appears in a film or is associated with a character or production; that does not necessarily mean the actor owned it.
- Public or editorial association: coverage connects a celebrity with a model, without establishing personal ownership of a particular example.
- Brand partnership: a celebrity or production is connected to a watchmaker through sponsorship or another brand relationship. This is not the same as ownership.
The distinction is visible in Rolex’s own descriptions of its cultural role. The company says, “The history of Rolex sponsorship is the story of the perpetual pursuit of excellence.” Its cinema page says an actor’s choice of a Rolex can give a character “a possible history, past and destiny.” Those are explanations of sponsorship and storytelling, not proof that a screen-worn watch belonged to the actor.
Our favourite watches with celebrity provenance
1. Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona 6239: the benchmark for documented ownership
Provenance type: documented personal ownership. What is established: Phillips records the Rolex Daytona reference 6239 as Paul Newman’s “Paul Newman” Daytona. At auction in 2017, Phillips reports that it sold for CHF 17,709,894 / US$17,752,500.
#1 Best Overall
This is the standout example because the celebrity connection is attached to a specific watch and a named auction record. It is also the source of the term “Paul Newman Daytona,” used for a distinctive Daytona dial style; that label should not be confused with proof that any watch described that way belonged to Newman. Phillips’ reported sale is an exceptional result for this documented watch, not a guide to the usual value of a Daytona or even of every reference 6239.
2. Elvis Presley’s Omega Constellation: a named-owner auction example
Provenance type: documented previous ownership. What is established: Antiquorum reported that an Omega Constellation previously owned by Elvis Presley sold for $52,500 in 2012.
The auction record gives this watch a firmer ownership connection than a general claim that Presley wore an Omega. The available description identifies the model as a Constellation; it does not provide a reference number here, so a buyer should not infer one. The 2012 result is a record for that reported sale, not a current valuation for all Constellations or all watches connected to Presley.

3. George Clooney and the Omega Speedmaster: a strong model association
Provenance type: celebrity-model association. What is established: Sotheby’s includes George Clooney and the Omega Speedmaster in its celebrity-watch overview.

The association is not, on the evidence cited here, documentation that a particular Speedmaster was owned by Clooney. Treat a listing that claims his personal watch as a separate provenance claim requiring its own evidence.
4. Virat Kohli and the Rolex Daytona: a sports-star association, not an ownership record
Provenance type: celebrity-model association. What is established: Sotheby’s lists Virat Kohli alongside the Rolex Daytona.
Rank #3
That connection makes the Daytona an easy model to recognise in a sports-celebrity conversation, but the overview does not establish that a particular Daytona was Kohli’s property. A seller’s use of his name should not be treated as authentication or as evidence of a price premium unless the seller can document the specific watch’s history.
5. Kylie Jenner’s white-gold Patek Philippe and Jay-Z’s Cartier Crash: two different kinds of appeal
Provenance type: celebrity-model associations. What is established: Sotheby’s connects Kylie Jenner with a white-gold Patek Philippe and Jay-Z with the Cartier Crash; the cited overview does not specify a Patek Philippe model or establish personal ownership of an individual watch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThese associations point to different collector conversations: precious-metal and brand appeal in the Patek Philippe example, and the distinctive design and relative scarcity associated with the Cartier Crash. Neither association alone proves that a watch offered for sale belonged to Jenner or Jay-Z. For an individual watch, condition, exact reference, documented history and authenticity matter more than a celebrity name attached to a listing.
6. Eric Clapton, Robin Williams and Isaac Slade: provenance worth following lot by lot
Provenance type: auction-house coverage of watches connected to named owners. What is established: Phillips’ June 2026 showbiz-provenance article identifies watches connected to Eric Clapton, Robin Williams and Isaac Slade and discusses their collector significance.
That makes these worthwhile names to look for in properly documented auction material, but the available article summary does not specify individual models, references or sale prices. Those details should be checked against the relevant lot record rather than guessed from the celebrity association.

Celebrity provenance can make a particular watch more culturally significant and attract attention at auction, but the examples here do not establish a general premium for celebrity-associated models. Newman’s Daytona and Presley’s Constellation are reported sales of specific watches with named ownership histories; their results cannot be transferred to an ordinary example of the same model.

Separate evidence about popularity from evidence about value. Watchfinder’s 2024 report ranked the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak first by media reach, followed by the Patek Philippe Nautilus and Rolex Daytona. It reported 313,673,169 media reach for the Royal Oak and 70,095,750 for the Omega Speedmaster. These are industry media-reach figures, not counts of owners, sales, or watches sold, and they do not demonstrate that celebrity association caused a price increase.
For a real valuation, compare the exact reference, condition, originality, documented service history, provenance quality and recent results for genuinely comparable watches. A famous former owner may be one part of that assessment, not a substitute for it.
How to check a pre-owned celebrity watch
A persuasive story is not the same as an authentic watch. Treat the watch and its claimed history as two things to verify: the watch may be genuine even if the celebrity story is unsupported, or a convincing story may accompany a watch that has not been properly authenticated.
Quick Recap
- Identify the exact watch. Record the reference and serial details and compare them with the seller’s description and available documentation. Do not assume that a model name or celebrity association identifies a particular reference.
- Check the provenance chain. Ask for the auction lot record, ownership documentation or other records supporting the specific claim. Confirm that the documents describe the watch being sold, rather than merely the same model.
- Review condition and service history. Ask what components have been replaced, what work has been carried out and whether records support those statements. Condition and originality can affect desirability as well as value.
- Assess the seller and the transaction. Verify the seller’s status, read the return terms and make sure the route for resolving a disputed authenticity claim is clear before paying. A marketplace listing or photograph alone does not authenticate a watch.
- Consider an official authentication route where available. Rolex says qualifying watches in its Certified Pre-Owned programme are authenticated through official retailers, have their components checked and are serviced, and come with a new two-year international guarantee. Check eligibility and programme terms with an official retailer; the programme is not a claim that every pre-owned Rolex listing has been examined.
