The Ring 4’s other important cost is membership, which unlocks most of the app’s insights and advanced features.
When did Oura Ring 4 come out?
Oura announced Ring 4 and opened preorders on October 3, 2024; shipping began October 15, 2024. It remains part of Oura’s product ecosystem, but Oura identifies Ring 5 as its newest generation as of August 2026. Oura’s launch announcement

Battery life in practice
Oura’s typical estimate is 5–8 days, not a promise that every wearer will get eight days. Size, settings, activity, feature configuration, battery age and usage affect runtime. Blood Oxygen Sensing and activity heart-rate recording can also draw on battery life. Check Oura’s Ring 4 battery guidance for conditions and support options before assuming a shorter runtime means the ring must be replaced.
What health features does Oura Ring 4 offer?
The ring records physiological signals; the app interprets them as scores, trends and recommendations. These are wellness tools, not medical diagnoses, and feature availability can vary by country, app version and account status.

Sleep
Ring 4 tracks sleep duration and timing, estimates sleep stages, and records inputs such as resting heart rate, HRV, overnight movement and respiration-related signals. It provides a Sleep Score and sleep-related blood-oxygen trends. Consumer-wearable sleep-stage estimates are not equivalent to polysomnography or a clinical sleep study.
Readiness and recovery
Readiness and recovery views bring together sleep quality and timing, overnight heart-rate and HRV patterns, temperature deviations and other signals. A Readiness Score is an algorithmic wellness estimate; it does not establish that you are healthy, free of illness or safe to exercise.
Heart rate and heart health
The sensors support heart-rate tracking, HRV and sleep respiration-rate measurements. Oura’s software ecosystem also includes features such as Cardiovascular Age and Cardio Capacity estimates. Their availability may depend on location, app version and membership. These estimates are not clinical cardiovascular tests.
Blood oxygen
Red and infrared LEDs measure blood oxygen during sleep, and the app can show breathing-related indicators. These are not a medical-grade pulse oximeter result or a diagnostic test for sleep apnea, hypoxemia or another condition.

Temperature and women’s health
The ring records temperature variations, not a conventional spot-temperature reading. With consistent wear and sufficient data history, Oura’s app can use temperature trends for menstrual-cycle and reproductive-health estimates where supported. Cycle and fertile-window predictions are estimates, not certainty; do not treat them as contraception unless using a specifically supported method and meeting all of its requirements.
Stress and resilience
Oura’s Daytime Stress and Resilience features use physiological trends to help contextualize periods of stress, recovery and restorative time. They do not diagnose psychological stress, anxiety or depression.
Activity and workouts
Ring 4 tracks movement and steps, supports Automatic Activity Detection, dynamic activity goals and activity heart rate, and can work with third-party health and fitness services such as Strava. It is a passive, screen-free tracker: it does not provide smartwatch-style GPS, notifications, a display or detailed live workout navigation.
Metabolic and glucose-related features
Ring 4 does not directly measure blood glucose; its listed hardware contains no glucose sensor. Metabolic features in Oura’s wider software ecosystem may rely on user-entered information or connected devices such as a continuous glucose monitor, rather than a reading taken by the ring itself. Availability and data sources depend on the feature and program.

What Smart Sensing does—and does not do
Oura says Ring 4 expanded available signal pathways from eight on Ring 3 to 18. Its Smart Sensing algorithms select among paths based on factors including finger, skin tone, physiology and activity, aiming to find a stronger or less obstructed signal. The 18 pathways are not 18 separate health measurements. Ring 4 is a more compelling upgrade if your Ring 3 battery is deteriorating, its interior is uncomfortable, you need a size outside the older range, or you specifically want the newer sensing design. Tom’s Guide reported that Gen 3 owners could receive the redesigned app and several software features without replacing their ring, so software alone may not justify an upgrade. Oura identifies Ring 5 as its newest generation. Oura says it is thinner, has about 40% less volume than Ring 4, and typically lasts 6–9 days versus Ring 4’s 5–8-day estimate. Ring 5 uses sizes 6–13, while Ring 4 covers sizes 4–15. - Choose Ring 4 if it is meaningfully discounted, you need its wider size range, or you value the core Oura app at a lower hardware price.
- Choose Ring 5 if you want the newer, thinner hardware and longer advertised battery life, and your size is available.
Fit, limitations and medical use
Use the Ring 4 sizing kit rather than relying on a Ring 3 or Ring 5 size. Wear the ring with its sensors toward the palm side of the finger. Finger size changes with heat, exercise and time of day; a loose fit can reduce sensor contact, while a ring that is too tight can be uncomfortable or hard to remove.
Oura Ring 4 is a consumer wellness wearable. Its measurements and scores can help you observe trends, but they are not a substitute for clinical testing, diagnosis or medical advice. It should not be relied on to diagnose sleep apnea, arrhythmias, hypertension, diabetes, infection, mental-health conditions, fertility status or emergencies. If a reading concerns you, consult a qualified clinician.
Who should buy Oura Ring 4?
- A good fit: Someone who prioritizes sleep, recovery, stress and long-term wellness trends in a discreet wearable, accepts the membership cost and does not need a screen or GPS.
- A reasonable Gen 3 upgrade: An owner with declining battery life, a comfort problem, or a need for one of Ring 4’s additional sizes.
- Look elsewhere: Someone who will not pay a subscription, wants live smartwatch functions, expects medical-grade measurements, or needs direct blood-pressure or glucose readings from the ring.
- Consider Ring 5 instead: A buyer paying close to full price who prioritizes the newest, thinner hardware and its longer advertised battery life.
Ring 4 Ceramic is a finish variant with a zirconia-ceramic exterior, not a separate sensor generation; its Smart Sensing platform remains Ring 4’s. It suits buyers who value that finish rather than those seeking additional health measurements. Oura Ring 4 Ceramic
