Oura Ring 5 is no longer a rumor. Oura announced it on May 28, 2026, opened preorders globally the same day, and began shipping on June 4. The headline upgrade is a substantially thinner ring, not a completely new category of wearable. Starting at $399 in the U.S., Ring 5 makes the most sense for first-time buyers who prioritize comfort, sleep and recovery insights, and Oura’s mature software. It is a much less compelling upgrade for comfortable Ring 4 owners—and a poor fit for anyone unwilling to pay Oura’s recurring membership fee.
What readers wanted from Oura Ring 5
- A thinner, lighter ring that is easier to sleep in
- More accurate health and workout tracking
- Longer battery life
- Better recovery and illness insights
- Smarter coaching and useful integrations
- Improved durability and sizing
- A cheaper membership—or no subscription at all
- A worthwhile upgrade for Ring 3 and Ring 4 owners
Ring 5 delivers some of these requests, especially comfort and hardware redesign. It does not solve the subscription question, add a display or smart alerts, or clearly turn Oura into a replacement for a dedicated sports watch.

What Oura Ring 5 actually changes
A much slimmer profile
Ring 5 measures 6.09mm wide and 2.28mm thick. Ring 4 measures 7.90mm wide and approximately 2.88mm thick. Oura says the new ring has 40% less volume than its predecessor. Both the inside and outside are titanium, with a superhard PVD coating; finishes include Black, Silver, Stealth, Brushed Silver, Gold, and Deep Rose.

The reduction is meaningful for people who found Ring 4 bulky while sleeping, wearing gloves, gripping equipment, or placing it beside another ring. However, “smaller” also creates trade-offs: Ring 5 stores less offline data and has a narrower size range.

Redesigned sensing hardware—not simply more sensors
Ring 5 uses two photodetectors, two triple-LED arrays with red, green, and infrared light, a digital temperature sensor, and an accelerometer. Ring 4 is listed with three photodetectors, so it would be inaccurate to describe Ring 5 as a straightforward sensor-count upgrade.
The defensible conclusion is that Oura redesigned the sensing system and claims it delivers more precise personal health data. That is a manufacturer claim, not proof of clinically superior accuracy. Independent testing should be treated separately from Oura’s specifications, and neither should be confused with medical validation.

Approximately a week of battery life
Oura says Ring 5 preserves approximately a week of battery life despite its smaller body. Charging takes about 80 minutes, depending on the ring’s battery level.
That “week” is an estimate, not a guaranteed result for every wearer. Battery life varies with ring size, blood-oxygen sensing, continuous heart-rate settings, workout tracking, sync frequency, temperature, battery age, and other usage patterns. The smaller body also does not automatically mean better endurance.
Three days of storage is a real compromise
Ring 5 stores up to three days of data, while Ring 4 is listed at up to seven days. That may not matter if your phone is nearby and the ring syncs regularly. It matters more when traveling, camping, avoiding your phone, or spending several days away from a reliable connection.

These are not all Ring 5-exclusive capabilities. Many are software features available on compatible earlier Oura generations with an active membership. Buying Ring 5 gives you the latest hardware; it does not mean every new insight was created specifically for this ring.
AI coaching is useful, but it is not a medical professional
Oura’s ecosystem includes AI-powered tools such as Oura Advisor. Oura Labs also lists Counsel, an AI-assisted medical-guidance service for U.S. members in 43 states. It is unavailable in Arkansas, the District of Columbia, Kansas, Mississippi, Rhode Island, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
These tools should not be interpreted as proof that Ring 5 measures health more accurately, and Counsel is not a substitute for a licensed clinician, emergency care, or a diagnosis. Availability may also depend on location, account status, opt-in conditions, and Oura’s policies. See Oura’s Labs information for current details.
Recovery and illness detection remain trend tools
Health Radar brings cardiovascular, respiratory, and strain signals together. Symptom Radar looks for deviations in metrics such as average body temperature, respiratory rate, resting heart rate, heart-rate variability, and inactive time.

Health Radar is available to eligible Gen3-or-newer members in the United States, India, and United Arab Emirates on iOS and Android. Feature availability is therefore not universal.
What Oura still needs to fix
The membership remains the biggest objection
Ring 5 starts at $399 in the U.S. Oura membership costs $5.99 per month or $69.99 per year in the U.S., with one month included for new members. At the annual rate, membership adds about $140 over two years or $210 over three years. A $399 ring plus three years of annual membership therefore costs approximately $609 before tax.
Without an active membership, you retain three daily scores, battery information, basic profile and settings, and Explore content. Deeper data, most biometrics, personalized guidance, and Oura API access require membership. Your data remains saved after cancellation, and CSV export remains available, but the full experience is subscription-dependent. Membership is attached to your Oura account rather than the physical ring.
That makes the subscription a central buying decision, not a footnote. Review Oura’s membership limitations and data policies before buying.
Workout tracking is still not the same as a sports watch
Ring 5 may be attractive for passive wellness, sleep, and recovery tracking, but buyers should not assume it replaces a running watch or cycling computer. Important questions include workout heart-rate accuracy, live tracking, GPS-dependent exercise recording, interval usefulness, strength-training recognition, and post-workout recovery guidance.
The ring has no display, conventional smartwatch notification system, smart alarm, sounds, lights, or vibrations. Oura’s own FAQ confirms that it does not provide on-ring alerts. If you need live pace, route navigation, intervals, or direct notifications, pair a smart ring with a watch rather than expecting Ring 5 to perform both roles.

Sizing is not transferable by default
Ring 5 comes in sizes 6–13; Ring 4 comes in sizes 4–15. A Ring 4 size 8 should not be assumed to fit like a Ring 5 size 8 because the proportions changed. Oura recommends the updated sizing kit, including for existing customers.
Precise sizing matters especially for people with arthritis, pregnancy-related swelling, temperature-sensitive fingers, or hands that change size during the day. Check the return terms before ordering and wear the sizing sample long enough to judge sleep comfort and daytime swelling.
Durability is strong on paper, but not scratch-proof
Ring 5 is fully titanium and water-resistant to 100m/328ft. Oura says it is suitable for sauna use and water sports, but not diving. Water resistance is not the same as waterproofing, and an official depth rating says little about cosmetic scratches over years of wear. Finish durability, battery aging, and long-term owner experience remain separate questions from the construction specification.

For a Ring 4 owner, the upgrade case is mainly comfort, dimensions, and the redesigned sensing hardware. If Ring 4 already feels comfortable and works reliably, the thinner profile and higher starting price may not justify replacement. Ring 4’s broader size range and longer listed storage can even make it the more practical option for some buyers, particularly if clearance stock is substantially cheaper and still carries appropriate warranty coverage.

Buy it if you are new to Oura
Ring 5 is the logical starting point if you want Oura’s sleep, readiness, stress, temperature, and recovery ecosystem and are comfortable budgeting for membership. The thinner body makes it easier to recommend than a bulkier predecessor for users who sleep in their ring every night.
Upgrade from Ring 3 if comfort or newer hardware matters
Ring 3 owners may see a more noticeable generational change, especially in physical comfort and the current software ecosystem. Still, verify feature compatibility, sizing, and the total membership cost rather than treating Ring 5 as a medical upgrade.

Keep Ring 4 if it already solves your problem
Ring 4 owners should upgrade mainly if the old ring feels intrusive, the redesigned profile addresses a specific fit problem, or the latest hardware is important to them. Do not upgrade solely for AI, Health Radar, or other software features that may also be available on earlier compatible rings.
Choose another ring if subscriptions are unacceptable
RingConn and Ultrahuman are commonly positioned as subscription-free alternatives. They may be better suited to buyers who prioritize avoiding recurring fees, although the precise feature sets, prices, integrations, battery claims, and regional availability should be checked on each manufacturer’s current site. You may give up some of Oura’s established app experience, reports, or ecosystem depth.
Samsung Galaxy Ring deserves consideration for Samsung Galaxy owners who want close Samsung Health and Galaxy-device integration. It is a weaker fit for iPhone users or anyone seeking a platform-agnostic ring. Current pricing and membership terms vary and should be confirmed directly.
Do not buy Ring 5 as a medical monitor
If your primary requirement is diagnosis, clinical monitoring, or a guaranteed medical alert, Ring 5 is the wrong category of product. Its wellness alerts can help identify changes in personal trends, but they do not replace professional assessment.
Compatibility, buying, and return precautions
The Oura app requires iOS 16 or later, or Android 11 or later with Google Play services, on a Bluetooth 5.0-capable device. Oura supports integrations including Strava, Apple Health, and Android Health Connect, but app and feature availability can vary by region.
Use the current Ring 5 sizing kit rather than relying on an older ring size. Buy through Oura, an authorized retailer, or an authorized reseller if warranty coverage matters. Secondhand rings can have unknown battery condition or account and device-history complications.
If you return a ring, cancel the membership separately when necessary so charges do not continue. Retailer return policies may differ from Oura’s direct-purchase terms. Shipping and inventory can also change; Oura reported in late July 2026 that some styles could take up to three weeks to ship.

Oura Ring 5 fulfills the most tangible wishlist item: it is substantially thinner while retaining approximately a week of claimed battery life and Oura’s mature sleep-and-recovery platform. It is a strong first Oura ring for people who value discreet comfort more than screens, alerts, or advanced sports-watch features.
But it is not a universal upgrade. Ring 4 owners get a smaller body at the cost of a higher entry price, a narrower size range, and reduced listed offline storage. The membership remains essential to the full experience, and Oura’s wellness alerts are not medical diagnoses. Buy Ring 5 for comfort and the ecosystem; keep Ring 4 for value; choose RingConn or Ultrahuman if avoiding subscriptions is the priority.
