Oura’s sickness-warning feature is called Symptom Radar. It looks for unusual changes in your personal patterns—such as temperature, resting heart rate, heart-rate variability, respiratory rate, inactivity and sleep—and can flag possible physiological strain before you notice obvious symptoms.
That does not mean your Oura Ring has detected a virus. Symptom Radar cannot diagnose COVID-19, influenza, a cold or any other disease, and it can produce an alert when you feel well or produce no alert when you are sick.

Symptom Radar is the sickness-related feature—not a brand-new 2026 tool
Oura launched Symptom Radar in 2024. The 2026 development is the expansion of the broader Health Radar experience, which brings Symptom Radar together with cardiovascular and respiratory insights. Oura’s announcement describes Symptom Radar as an existing part of that wider system.
The important distinction is that Symptom Radar is a pattern-change detector. It is not a clinical thermometer, infection test or medical-monitoring device. Oura says it is designed to identify possible early signs of common respiratory illnesses and general strain by comparing recent measurements with your established baseline.

What Oura measures
According to Oura’s support documentation, Symptom Radar considers several signals:
- Average body temperature
- Respiratory rate
- Resting heart rate
- Heart-rate variability, or HRV
- Inactive time
- Sleep data
- Profile information such as age, sex assigned at birth, height and weight
The algorithm is looking for a combination of changes, not one isolated number. A higher overnight temperature or an unusually elevated resting heart rate may be meaningful in context, but neither proves that you are becoming ill.
What the three alert levels mean
| Alert | What it means | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| No signs | No obvious biometric evidence of unusual strain | Not proof that you are healthy or cannot become ill |
| Minor signs | Smaller changes suggesting some physiological strain | A reason to pay attention to recovery and symptoms |
| Major signs | Stronger changes suggesting greater strain | A prompt to consider rest—not confirmation of infection |
“Major signs” is not a probability score and does not mean you are definitely getting sick. It also does not identify what might be causing the change.

Oura’s product messaging has said Symptom Radar may identify cold- or flu-like changes up to two days before symptoms fully appear. That is positioning from the feature’s rollout, not a guaranteed prediction window.
Current support material uses more cautious language: the feature may provide an early warning before noticeable symptoms, but it can miss illness and can warn when you feel fine. Oura does not publish a fixed lead time that every user should expect.

Who can use Symptom Radar?
The current requirements are:
- Oura Ring Gen3 or newer; Gen2 and earlier are not supported.
- An active Oura membership.
- An iPhone or Android phone.
- At least seven nights of sleep data within the previous 14 days, including the latest night.
- A snug, consistent ring fit and enough uninterrupted sleep data.
- Complete and accurate profile information.
Oura currently lists Symptom Radar in English for users in the United States, India and the United Arab Emirates. In those markets it appears within Health Radar. Users elsewhere may find it under the Vitals tab, so the menu path is not universal. Oura’s Health Radar documentation has the latest regional information.
How to find and use it in the Oura app
- Wear the ring overnight.
- Open the Oura App the following morning.
- Look for a Symptom Radar card on the Today screen if Oura detects a clear change.
- Tap the card to review the contributing biometric changes.
- Alternatively, open Vitals or Health Radar, depending on your region and app configuration.
- Open Symptom Radar. Eligible members generally have it enabled by default, but it can be toggled off or on from the detail screen.
If the app is still calibrating or reports insufficient data, continue wearing the ring at night rather than treating the absence of a result as a clean bill of health.

What to do after an alert
Use an alert as a reason to reassess your schedule, not as a diagnosis.
- Check how you actually feel and note any symptoms.
- Reduce strenuous exercise if you are fatigued or unwell.
- Rest, hydrate and monitor your symptoms using ordinary health judgment.
- Follow appropriate local guidance for medical testing or treatment.
- Seek medical care for serious, worsening or unusual symptoms.
Oura may recommend Rest Mode. You can also activate it yourself. Rest Mode pauses the Activity Score, activity goal and activity contributors, while Symptom Radar continues monitoring.
Do not change medication, nutrition or medical treatment solely because of an Oura alert.

Why Symptom Radar can be wrong
The same biometric changes associated with illness can also follow other disruptions. Hard training, poor sleep, psychological stress, alcohol, travel, injury and other changes may plausibly create a pattern that resembles illness-related strain. These are examples of possible confounders, not an exhaustive list published by Oura.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Oura specifically warns that Symptom Radar may not work optimally during pregnancy or with some pre-existing medical conditions. A poor fit, interrupted blood flow or missing sleep data can also weaken the result.
If you feel sick but see “No signs”
Trust your symptoms over the app. Oura explicitly acknowledges that Symptom Radar may fail to warn when someone is ill. Consider medical advice or testing when appropriate.
If you see “Major signs” but feel fine
The alert could reflect an early change, general physiological strain or a noninfectious disruption. Consider taking it easier and monitoring yourself, but do not treat it as proof that you have an infection.
If it is stuck on “Calculating”
Check your profile details and continue wearing the ring consistently. Make sure the fit is snug and that you have the required seven nights of recent sleep data. If the ring is loose or sleep measurements are interrupted, Oura may not have enough information to establish a useful comparison.

Symptom Radar and the Readiness Score are not the same
Both features use some overlapping data, but they answer different questions. Readiness summarizes how prepared you may be for activity and daily demands. Symptom Radar looks for changes associated with unusual strain.
As Oura explains in its Health Radar documentation, Symptom Radar can show a change before the Readiness Score declines. A normal Readiness Score therefore should not automatically overrule a symptom warning—or your own symptoms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How accurate is it?
There is a credible scientific basis for investigating wearable-based early warnings. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis found that wearable devices showed potential for detecting conditions including COVID-19 and atrial fibrillation, while also noting limitations in study quality, device variety and real-world validation.
Oura has also cited research including the TemPredict study, which examined whether physiological changes recorded by Oura Rings could precede COVID-19 symptoms. That supports the broader concept of passive physiological monitoring. It does not prove that the current commercial Symptom Radar algorithm accurately diagnoses respiratory infections for every wearer.
The key limitation is that Oura’s public product documentation does not provide independent clinical sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, false-positive or false-negative figures for the current Symptom Radar implementation. Oura explains its inputs and limitations, but there is no published performance table showing how often it correctly predicts colds or flu.

Is Oura worth buying for sickness warnings?
Symptom Radar alone is unlikely to justify buying an Oura Ring. It requires a Gen3-or-newer ring and an active membership, and it is not a clinically validated illness test.
Oura may make sense if you also want passive overnight tracking for sleep, recovery, temperature trends, heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, stress and readiness—and you are comfortable with a recurring subscription. Check the official store page for current hardware and membership terms, since prices and plans can change.
It is a poor fit if you want a direct temperature or oxygen measurement, refuse subscriptions, do not want to wear a device overnight, or need confirmation of a specific illness.

How alternatives differ
| Product or tool | Best fit | Main difference |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch | Smartwatch users who want notifications, apps, workouts, GPS and emergency features | More screen- and smartwatch-oriented than Oura |
| Fitbit | Mainstream activity and sleep tracking | Wrist-based hardware, app and subscription structure differ |
| WHOOP | Athletes focused on strain, recovery and training load | Subscription-centered and performance-oriented |
| Thermometer, pulse oximeter or clinical test | Users who need a direct measurement or confirmation | Better for a specific health question than generalized trend monitoring |
Studies comparing Oura, Fitbit and Apple Watch for sleep tracking should not be treated as evidence that any of them can diagnose sickness. Sleep-validation results and illness-detection performance are separate questions.
Bottom line
Oura’s Symptom Radar is best understood as a passive “pay attention and consider resting” signal. It may spot unusual physiological changes before you notice symptoms, but it cannot tell you which illness you have—or establish that you are ill at all. Buy into the Oura ecosystem for its broader sleep and recovery tracking, with Symptom Radar as a potentially useful secondary feature rather than a medical test.
