Which 42mm Luminor is this?
The watch behind the headline is the PAM01710, the steel model with a matte black dial and beige textile strap. It is one of three new 42mm references, alongside the green-dial steel PAM01711 and the blue-dial, black DLC-coated PAM01714. The smaller case brings the family’s sharply defined 1990s design to wrists for which a 44mm or 47mm Luminor may feel like too much watch, without reducing the model to a simple scaled-down replica.

What makes the PAM01710 compelling?
A smaller case with the Luminor’s defining shape
Panerai traces the sharper Luminor case to an evolution from the cushion-shaped designs of the 1960s. Its defining cues include crisp edges, solid lugs and the curved bridge protecting the crown. The brand dates the first civilian presentation of this design language to September 10, 1993, with reference 5218-201/A. The PAM01710 carries those shapes into a 42mm polished-and-brushed steel case.
Fratello’s report lists the new family’s dimensions as 42 × 13.8mm and weight as 126g. Those thickness and weight figures are reported for the three-reference family, not specifically for the PAM01710.

A clear, no-date dial
The matte black dial has luminous Arabic numerals and hour markers, plus a small-seconds display at 9 o’clock. It has neither a date window nor sandwich construction. That gives the face a restrained, straightforward look, but it also means the watch lacks features some Luminor enthusiasts may expect. The legibility and cleaner appearance are part of the PAM01710’s appeal; the absent date and sandwich dial are genuine trade-offs rather than hidden omissions.
Automatic movement and three-day reserve
Panerai specifies its automatic P.980 calibre, with 23 jewels, 169 components, one barrel and a frequency of 28,800 alternations per hour. The stated power reserve is three days. The movement includes a stop-seconds function for synchronization, and Panerai says it tests the calibre in six positions. The brand also says each watch is pressure-tested at its Neuchâtel manufacture to 25% above its guaranteed rating; these are manufacturer statements, not independent test results.

The 50-bar figure is the manufacturer’s stated rating; it does not, by itself, establish that the watch is appropriate for every dive or water activity. The PAM01710 is the most restrained option in the trio: polished-and-brushed steel, black dial and beige textile strap. The green-dial PAM01711 keeps the steel case but changes the face’s character, while the PAM01714 opts for a darker coated finish and blue dial at the higher reported price.
Who is the PAM01710 for—and who might prefer another Luminor?
Fratello’s Jorg Weppelink describes the 42mm models as an option for people drawn to Luminor design who find 44mm or 47mm cases too large. In his hands-on account, the PAM01710 felt familiar on his wrist; that is one reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee of fit for every wearer. Trying the watch on is especially useful if case thickness, strap feel or the visual presence of the crown-protecting bridge matters to you.

- It may suit you if you want the Luminor’s bold case design in a smaller diameter, prefer a clean dial without a date, and like textile straps.
- Another Luminor may suit you better if you specifically want a larger 44mm or 47mm presence, a sandwich dial, a date display or a thick leather strap.
Is it really Panerai’s best watch in years?
That is a subjective verdict, not a measurable product specification. The argument for the PAM01710 is that it combines the Luminor’s instantly recognizable case with a less imposing 42mm diameter, a pared-back black dial and serious stated water resistance, while retaining an automatic movement with a three-day reserve. The counterargument is equally clear: this version leaves out the sandwich construction and date some enthusiasts want, and its smaller proportions will not satisfy everyone who buys a Luminor for its oversized presence.
For someone who likes the design but has passed over larger Luminors, the PAM01710 is a persuasive new interpretation. For fans of the traditional larger format or its familiar dial details, it is a different expression of the line—not an automatic replacement for the watches they already prefer.
