The Panerai PAM00572 is a 45 mm steel Radiomir 1940 3 Days Automatic, introduced in 2014 with the brand’s P.4000 micro-rotor calibre. The movement made the model notable within the Radiomir 1940 line: it was the first automatic calibre fitted to that line and Panerai’s first movement with a decentralized oscillating weight. The available contemporary coverage is an introduction, not a hands-on account of PAM572, so the details below are attributed to that launch report.
What is the Panerai PAM572?
PAM00572, also styled PAM572, is the steel version of the Radiomir 1940 3 Days Automatic Acciaio. Panerai introduced it alongside the red-gold PAM00573. The Radiomir 1940 was described at launch as a hybrid between Panerai’s traditional Luminor and Radiomir collections. Evald Muraj’s September 29, 2014 Hodinkee introduction identifies both versions as 45 mm.
The steel PAM572 has a black dial with luminous sandwich numerals and baton indices. Its red-gold sibling has a brown dial. The launch report also distinguishes the two by rotor material: tungsten in the steel model and 22-carat gold in the gold model.
What movement is in the PAM572?
The PAM572 uses Panerai’s P.4000, a manufacture automatic calibre. Muraj’s 2014 launch report called it the first automatic movement fitted inside a Radiomir 1940 and Panerai’s first movement with a decentralized oscillating weight, commonly known as a micro-rotor. The report lists hacking seconds, a balance running at 28,800 vibrations per hour, two barrels arranged in series, and a three-day power reserve.

Those are specifications as stated in the launch coverage, rather than independent measurements of a particular watch. The two barrels in series are the reported basis for the three-day reserve; “three days” is also commonly expressed as 72 hours.
What does the P.4000 micro-rotor mean?
An automatic watch winds itself as its wearer moves, using a weighted rotor that turns with motion and transfers energy to the mainspring. In a conventional layout, the rotor sits centrally over much of the movement. A micro-rotor is a smaller oscillating weight positioned off-center and integrated into the movement rather than mounted as a full-size weight above it. The P.4000’s decentralized rotor let Panerai offer automatic winding in the Radiomir 1940 while keeping the movement architecture distinct from a conventional central-rotor arrangement.

The launch report specifically identifies the PAM572’s rotor as tungsten. The separate 2016 Hodinkee hands-on article covers the 42 mm PAM655, not PAM572; it gives P.4000-family context, including a stated 3.95 mm movement thickness and a two-point balance bridge. Those details should not be treated as PAM572-specific case or watch measurements.
How does the PAM572 compare with the PAM573?
| Reference | Case material and size | Dial | Rotor material |
|---|---|---|---|
| PAM00572 | Steel, 45 mm | Black, luminous sandwich numerals and baton indices | Tungsten |
| PAM00573 | Red gold, 45 mm | Brown, luminous sandwich numerals and baton indices | 22-carat gold |
The comparison reflects the launch report. It does not establish a difference in movement performance between the two references.

Is the PAM572 a hands-on review?
No. The cited contemporary article introduces PAM572 and its movement; it is not a personal wear test. A later Hodinkee hands-on concerns the different 42 mm PAM655. It may offer context about the P.4000 calibre family, but it cannot establish how PAM572 wears or performs in practice.

No current price or availability for PAM572 is established here. The $10,000 figure in the 2016 Hodinkee article was the historical listed price for PAM655 at that time, not a PAM572 price and not a current valuation. Before considering a particular pre-owned example, compare its condition, service history, completeness, seller credentials, and asking price; confirm the reference and authenticity with a qualified specialist.
