The Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Xiali Calendar translates the Chinese lunisolar calendar into a mechanical wristwatch. Its dial brings together the year cycle, month and leap-month information, day and month length, the 24 solar terms and moon phases. The central technical distinction is that it is programmed for a 12-year indication cycle, not a perpetual calendar.
How does the Tonda PF Xiali Calendar work?
The Xiali calendar coordinates lunar months with the solar year. Because those cycles do not align, the calendar adds an intercalary month to reconcile them; Parmigiani Fleurier says this occurs approximately every three years. The system also divides the solar year into 24 solar terms, known as Jieqi. Parmigiani describes the calculations as being made separately and then synchronized (Parmigiani Fleurier’s steel-and-platinum product page).
The watch’s mechanical calendar is programmed for 12 years. Fondation Haute Horlogerie explains that the Chinese calendar is not cyclical and says the indications remain accurate during that period as long as the watch is worn and wound (Fondation Haute Horlogerie’s technical overview). That operating condition matters: the stated horizon is not a promise that the watch will keep running or display correctly if it stops or is not wound.
What does the Tonda PF Xiali Calendar display?
The dial combines several kinds of calendar information, rather than presenting a single date. Parmigiani Fleurier’s rose-gold product page describes the display and its indications (Tonda PF Xiali Calendar in rose gold).

- 12 o’clock: the year name, its zodiac animal and its natural element, drawing on the ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches.
- Outer ring: the 24 solar terms, or Jieqi.
- 3 o’clock: the day number and whether the current lunar month has 29 or 30 days.
- 9 o’clock: whether the current month is an intercalary month.
- 6 o’clock: the moon phase.
Parmigiani says Chinese New Year falls between January 21 and February 19 in the Gregorian calendar. That range helps explain why a Gregorian date alone cannot describe the Chinese calendar’s year boundary (Parmigiani Fleurier’s steel-and-platinum product page).
Is the Tonda PF Xiali a perpetual calendar?
No. Parmigiani Fleurier explicitly says that the variable calculations make a “perpetual” Chinese calendar impossible. The watch instead uses a 12-year mechanical programming horizon, with the accuracy of its indications contingent on it being worn and wound, according to Fondation Haute Horlogerie. Calling it perpetual would blur the important difference between a calendar that runs without correction indefinitely and this finite programmed cycle.

Steel and platinum or rose gold?
Both versions use a 42 mm case, measure 12.2 mm thick and are powered by the automatic PF008 movement, listed with a 54-hour power reserve. Their materials and published prices differ; the figures below are page-specific listings, not a currency-normalized comparison.

Why this calendar is unusual in a wristwatch
The challenge is not simply displaying a moon phase alongside a date. The Xiali mechanism must represent a calendar that reconciles lunar months with the solar year, accounts for an added month and tracks the solar terms, while also presenting year-cycle naming information. Parmigiani’s layout assigns separate indications to those distinct pieces of information; its finite 12-year programming horizon reflects the calendar’s non-cyclical character as described by Fondation Haute Horlogerie.
The brand frames calendars as cultural records as well as mechanisms. In a press announcement dated January 16, 2025, CEO Guido Terreni described them as “the X-rays of civilizations,” a statement of the brand’s perspective rather than a technical claim (Parmigiani Fleurier press announcement).
