The two documented versions, 5172G-001 and 5172G-010, share the case and movement but differ in dial and strap. That makes them the clearest like-for-like comparison within this model family; the available specifications do not establish a head-to-head verdict against another maker.
What the 5172G offers
The 5172G pairs a traditional chronograph layout with a manually wound movement. Patek Philippe describes the CH 29-535 PS as using a column wheel and horizontal clutch alongside six patented innovations. Those construction details identify the movement’s architecture, but do not by themselves establish that it is superior to a competitor’s caliber.
The movement measures 29.6 mm in diameter and 5.35 mm thick. Patek lists 270 parts, 33 jewels, a frequency of 4 Hz, and a minimum 65-hour power reserve when the chronograph is disengaged. Its displays include a central chronograph hand, an instantaneous 30-minute counter, and small seconds.
How the chronograph is laid out
On the 5172G-001, the central hand records elapsed seconds, the 30-minute counter sits at 3 o’clock, and small seconds appear at 9 o’clock. A tachymeter scale runs around the dial. Round guilloched pushers operate the chronograph, while luminescent white-gold applied numerals and syringe-shaped hands provide the time display.

This is a manually wound watch, so the wearer winds it by hand rather than relying on an automatic rotor. The stated 65-hour minimum reserve applies with the chronograph disengaged; Patek does not list that figure as a chronograph-running reserve.

The blue -001 has the more overtly sporty color treatment, with a navy strap; the -010 shifts toward warmer tones through its rose-gilt dial and brown alligator strap. Those are differences in appearance and listed materials, not evidence of different movement performance. Both official product pages list the same 41 mm white-gold case and caliber.

Vintage-inspired case, with modern materials
Patek Philippe points to the case shape, three-tier lugs, guilloched pushers, and box-style sapphire crystal as vintage-inspired elements. The case measures 41 mm across and 11.45 mm thick, with a sapphire crystal case back. The manufacturer lists a white-gold fold-over clasp for both versions.
What 30 m water resistance means in practice
Patek Philippe publishes water resistance to 30 m for both variants. That is the stated rating, not a promise that the watch is suitable for swimming or other water activities. Treat the 5172G as a dress-oriented mechanical chronograph and follow Patek Philippe’s guidance for water exposure, especially if the watch has not been checked for water resistance recently.

On pages accessed 2026-10-08, Patek Philippe displayed a price of $97,150 for each variant. Tourneau also displayed $97,150 for the 5172G-001. The two 5172G versions can be compared directly because the manufacturer lists the same case dimensions and movement for both. A broader contest with another high-end chronograph needs comparable evidence on case material and size, winding method, chronograph construction and functions, legibility, water resistance, ownership and service context, and dated regional pricing. Without those matched specifications, a ranking would be more assertion than comparison.
