Which Patek Philippe 5178G is this?
This article concerns the 5178G-012, the white-gold Rare Handcrafts minute repeater introduced in Patek Philippe’s 2023 Watches and Wonders release. The suffix matters: the official operating instructions available for the 5178 and caliber R 27 PS are for the earlier 5178G-001, while the current product page and 2023 release identify the -012. The manual helps explain the gong construction, but it should not be mistaken for a model-specific acoustic test of the -012.
The -012’s dial is a blue Grand Feu flinqué enamel design over a hand-guilloched swirling pattern. Its core appeal is the combination of a chiming complication and elaborate hand-finished dial work, rather than a conventional time-only display.
What do cathedral gongs mean, and how does the repeater sound?
A minute repeater sounds the time on demand. In the 5178G-012, the repeater uses two cathedral gongs, and the movement also displays small seconds. Patek Philippe describes cathedral gongs as nearly twice the length of conventional gongs and says they wrap around the movement almost twice. The company attributes a full, sonorous tone to that extended construction.

Patek Philippe’s product page characterizes the 5178G-012’s chime as rich and deep. Those are the maker’s descriptions, not independent measurements. No listening test, sound-pressure figure, or recording conditions are available here, so this is not a hands-on sound review and should not be read as one.
Patek Philippe also states that Thierry Stern performs a final sound test on each minute repeater the company produces. That is a description of the manufacturer’s quality-control process; it does not establish that Stern tested any particular 5178G-012 discussed here.

Blue enamel and hand-guilloché
The dial plate is 18K gold. Patek Philippe says the swirling motif is first hand-guilloched into the plate, then covered with translucent blue Grand Feu enamel. White-gold applied Breguet numerals and Breguet-style hands complete the display.

The case measures 40 mm across and 10.53 mm thick. It is supplied with interchangeable solid and sapphire-crystal backs, allowing the wearer to choose between a more closed caseback and a view of the movement.

The caliber R 27 PS is an automatic minute-repeater movement with two cathedral gongs and small seconds. Patek Philippe lists a 22K gold off-center guilloched minirotor, a Gyromax balance and Spiromax balance spring, and the Patek Philippe Seal. Published specifications are:

Water resistance and practical ownership
The case is not water-resistant. Patek Philippe says it is protected against humidity and dust only, so the 5178G-012 should not be treated as a watch for swimming or water exposure. Its interchangeable backs and supplied second strap offer some choice in presentation, but neither changes that limitation.
