What is the Patek Philippe 5960/1A-001?
It is a specific steel reference in Patek Philippe’s 5960 Annual Calendar Chronograph family. In the reference, “A” denotes acier, French for steel. Patek Philippe introduced the steel version in March 2014, replacing the then-current gold and platinum versions of the 5960; Christie’s records it as discontinued in 2018. The reference is distinct from the later black-dial steel 5960/1A-010. Phillips identifies the -001 as the white-dial version with red accents and records both steel references as discontinued in 2018. Phillips’ 5960 family guide provides that distinction.

Christie’s records the -001 with a 40.5 mm stainless-steel case, silvered dial, and matching steel bracelet. The bright dial and red accents help distinguish it visually from the later black-dial -010. The bracelet is part of the reference’s identity: it is not simply a strap version of the same configuration. Movement and functions
Specialist catalog records list the automatic calibre CH 28-520 IRM QA 24H. Its functions bring together a flyback chronograph, annual calendar with day, date, and month displays, power-reserve indication, and day/night indicator. The chronograph’s elapsed minutes and hours share the lower register. The central chronograph hand can run continuously and serve as a seconds hand. The pusher at 4 o’clock resets the chronograph when it is stopped; while it is running, the same pusher triggers the flyback function, resetting and restarting timing without first stopping the hand. How the annual calendar works
The calendar automatically distinguishes months with 30 days from those with 31. It does not account for February’s shorter length, so it is not a perpetual calendar. If the watch has remained running, its calendar needs a one-day manual correction on March 1. Patek Philippe stated this operating rule in its 2006 Ref. 5960 release.
The calendar is displayed through three apertures for day, date, and month, alongside a day/night indicator. That arrangement makes the calendar information directly readable on the dial while the chronograph’s elapsed time is tracked in the lower register. What to check when buying a pre-owned 5960/1A-001
Because the steel reference was discontinued in 2018, availability is a pre-owned-market question. Treat any inventory or asking price as specific to the listing and the date you view it; no market-wide current price or production total is established by the cited records.
- Confirm the exact reference and dial. Check that the watch is presented as the -001, not the later black-dial -010 or another 5960 configuration.
- Assess condition. Review the case, bracelet, dial, hands, and operation, and ask for clear photographs and an in-person inspection where practical.
- Check completeness and provenance. Compare the box, papers or origin documentation, accessories, and any available ownership records with what the seller says is included.
- Ask about service history. Request dated service records and clarify what work was performed and by whom.
- Evaluate the seller and listing date. Use a reputable specialist or auction house, verify the listing is current, and do not treat one auction result or listing as a market-wide valuation.
