The original black-enamel 5370P-001 arrived in 2015; the blue-enamel 5370P-011 followed in 2020. Their case and caliber are shared, but the 30-minute counter moves from 3 o’clock on the black model to 6 o’clock on the blue one. This review separates the variants and explains what the extra chronograph hand does. It is based on published specifications and attributed reviews, not a hands-on examination by WatchRanker.
Which Patek Philippe 5370P is this?
“Ref. 5370P” can mean either the black-dial 5370P-001 or the blue-dial 5370P-011. Both use the manually wound CHR 29-535 PS and a 41 mm platinum case. The dial finish, strap color and counter layout distinguish them; specifications below are tied to the relevant variant rather than blended together.
| Detail | Black 5370P-001 (2015) | Blue 5370P-011 (2020) |
|---|---|---|
| Dial | Genuine black enamel on white gold; applied 18K white-gold Breguet numerals | Blue Grand Feu enamel on white gold; applied Breguet numerals |
| 30-minute counter | 3 o’clock | 6 o’clock |
| Subsidiary seconds | Not stated in the 2015 release as a position | 9 o’clock |
| Strap | Shiny black, hand-stitched alligator leather with large square scales | Night-blue alligator |
| Case and water resistance | 41 mm platinum; 13.56 mm thick; 30 m (3 bar) | 41 mm platinum; 13.56 mm thick; 30 m |
| Power reserve | 55-hour minimum to 65-hour maximum, per Patek Philippe’s 2015 release | Minimum 65 hours with the chronograph stopped, per Patek Philippe’s 2020 release |
The variant-specific details and figures come from Patek Philippe’s 2015 technical release and 2020 release. The different reserve wording matters: the 2015 figure is a stated range, while the 2020 release gives a minimum under the stated condition.
How the split-seconds chronograph works
A conventional chronograph measures elapsed time. A split-seconds chronograph, also called a rattrapante, adds a second central hand so you can read an intermediate or lap time while the main chronograph hand continues running. The stopped hand then catches up with the moving one. Patek Philippe’s instructions describe its purpose as follows: “Its ingenious function allows lap and intermediate times to be stopped without interrupting an ongoing measurement.”

Operating the 5370P
- Press the pusher at 2 o’clock to start the chronograph; both chronograph hands begin together.
- Press the button integrated into the crown to stop the split-seconds hand and read the intermediate time while the other hand continues.
- Press the crown button again. The stopped hand catches up with the running hand.
- Press the 2 o’clock pusher to stop the chronograph, then the 4 o’clock pusher to reset it.
Patek Philippe’s official instructions warn not to reset before the chronograph hands are superposed: otherwise, the split-seconds hand may remain at its last lap-time position. The instructions also advise against leaving the chronograph running permanently because doing so could cause premature wear. On the blue 5370P-011, the rattrapante control is integrated into the crown at 3 o’clock; the start/stop and reset pushers are at 2 and 4 o’clock, respectively.
Movement and construction
Both variants use Patek Philippe’s manually wound CHR 29-535 PS, a 29.6 mm-diameter, 7.1 mm-high movement with 312 parts and 34 jewels. Patek’s 2015 release specifies two column wheels, a horizontal clutch, an instantaneous 30-minute counter, sweep chronograph and split-seconds hands, and subsidiary seconds. It also lists 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour (4 Hz), a Gyromax balance and a Breguet balance spring. These are construction and specification details, not an independent accuracy or performance assessment.

Patek Philippe says the movement includes an isolator that uncouples the split-seconds wheel from the chronograph wheel while the rattrapante hand is stopped, intended to avoid unwanted friction and degradation of balance amplitude. The maker also describes a lever and ruby roller that help keep the hands aligned when superposed. These are the manufacturer’s stated design functions, not independently measured outcomes.
Case dimensions and wrist fit
Patek Philippe gives both versions a 41 mm platinum case measuring 13.56 mm thick, with 30 m (3 bar) water resistance. The 2015 dimensions for the black 5370P-001 further specify 49.92 mm lug-to-lug, 45.62 mm across including the crown and 22 mm between the lugs. Its case has a sapphire-crystal display back and an interchangeable solid-platinum back, plus a diamond between the lugs at 6 o’clock. The 30 m rating is the published specification; it is not a basis for treating the watch as suitable for swimming.

On the question of size, Felix Scholz wrote in Time+Tide on 20 April 2015 that the black-dial watch felt modern without being too large, and did not sit too high for a complicated movement. That is one reviewer’s subjective impression, not a universal fit verdict. Wrist comfort depends on wrist shape and preference, and this article does not claim a physical wear test.
Dial, case and finishing impressions
The black 5370P-001 pairs black enamel and white scales with applied white-gold Breguet numerals; the blue 5370P-011 changes the visual emphasis with blue Grand Feu enamel and a night-blue strap. The counter’s shift to 6 o’clock on the blue version also changes the dial’s balance, so the two should not be treated as simple colorways of an identical layout.

Benjamin Clymer, writing for Hodinkee on 24 March 2015, called the black model “Pure Patek,” praising the combination of an in-house caliber, enamel dial and traditional styling. That is a critic’s evaluation rather than an objective ranking. Patek Philippe places the reference in a longer history of the complication: the company says its first split-seconds wrist chronograph was made as a special commission in 1923, with its first series-produced wrist chronographs following in 1927. That context does not establish an uninterrupted production lineage to the 5370P.

Phillips describes the 5370P as launched at Baselworld in 2015 and discontinued in 2020 alongside the blue-enamel successor. That production-status description comes from Phillips, not a current availability notice from Patek Philippe. No current price, live inventory or authorized availability is established here; a CHF 220,000 figure reported by Time+Tide in 2015 is historical launch-era pricing, not a current valuation.

For a pre-owned example, assess the individual watch and its documentation rather than relying on the reference name alone:
- Condition: inspect the case, dial, hands, movement and strap, and ask what has been replaced or refinished.
- Service documentation: seek dated records identifying who performed the service and what work was completed.
- Provenance and completeness: confirm the watch’s history and which accessories, papers and packaging accompany it.
- Seller reliability: verify the seller, return terms and any claims about service or authenticity independently.
A Phillips listing for an example notes recent Patek Philippe service and complete accessories, illustrating why service history and completeness are worth checking; it does not establish the condition or value of other examples.
