How does the Patek Philippe 5224R work?
The 5224R-001 uses two central hour hands to display two time zones. The solid rose-gold syringe-style hand indicates local time; the skeletonized hand indicates home time. Both read against the 24-hour indication, so the dial distinguishes day from night without a separate AM/PM indicator. Patek Philippe describes it as an automatic Travel Time dual-time model.
Adjusting the time zones
The crown has three positions. With it pushed home, the movement can be wound. In the middle position, the local-time hand can be advanced or moved back in one-hour increments. Pulled fully out, the crown sets home time, local time and minutes together, with stop seconds. These operating details are specified by Patek Philippe in its product information and 2023 technical material.
How to read the 24-hour dial
Read the two central hands against the 24-hour scale: each hand gives the hour in its corresponding time zone, and the scale indicates where that hour falls in the day. For example, a reading of 18 is 6 p.m., not 6 a.m. This removes the ambiguity that can arise when reading a conventional 12-hour hour hand without an AM/PM marker.

The distinctive choice is the orientation: Patek Philippe places noon at 12 o’clock rather than at 6. The manufacturer presents the arrangement as a modern reinterpretation of 24-hour watches, including earlier Chronometro Gondolo examples. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry says the daytime-oriented layout is intended to enhance visibility during daytime hours. That is a design rationale, not the result of a published comparative legibility test.
