The Patek Philippe 5172G-001 is a hand-wound chronograph; the 5905/1A-001 is self-winding. A chronograph measures elapsed time: its timing hand can be started, stopped, and reset using pushers. With a hand-wound watch, the wearer winds the movement. A self-winding, or automatic, movement uses wrist motion to power its winding system; the 5905/1A-001 page identifies a central rotor. Automatic winding does not eliminate the need to set the watch or the possibility of occasional manual winding. The cited specifications do not quantify how often either watch needs winding in everyday wear.

How do the 5172G-001 and 5905/1A-001 compare?

What is different about the chronograph mechanisms?
5172G-001: column wheel and horizontal clutch
The CH 29-535 PS is a manually wound calibre. Patek Philippe lists a traditional column wheel and horizontal clutch, with a central chronograph hand and instantaneous 30-minute counter. The counter records elapsed minutes up to 30 before beginning another cycle; the small-seconds display serves the watch’s timekeeping function.

5905/1A-001: vertical clutch and flyback
The self-winding CH 28-520 QA 24H combines a vertical clutch with a flyback chronograph and 60-minute counter, alongside the Annual Calendar. The product page identifies the flyback function but does not explain its operating sequence. In general, a flyback allows a running chronograph to be reset and restarted in one operation; consult the watch’s official instructions for the specific procedure.

What should you consider beyond winding?
The 5172G-001 is a 41 mm white-gold watch, 11.45 mm thick, with no calendar listed on its product page. The 5905/1A-001 is a 42 mm steel watch, 14.13 mm thick, and adds an Annual Calendar. The automatic example is therefore thicker and includes a calendar complication, while the manual example has a shorter listed case thickness and a longer stated reserve under the specific condition noted above. These are reference-specific differences, not general rules about manual and automatic watches.
Patek Philippe’s wider chronograph range also includes CH 29-535 family variants with additional complications, including split-seconds and perpetual-calendar functions. The 2026 5978P-010, for example, is described with a CH 29-535 PS QI and instantaneous perpetual calendar.
