Its 34.5 × 39.5 mm case is 5.9 mm thick, and its self-winding caliber 240 is rated for at least 48 hours of power reserve. This is a reference-specific overview, not a first-person wear review: the specifications and design details below are from Patek Philippe, with published observations attributed to their authors.
What the 5738/1R-001 is
“5738” can refer to several distinct Golden Ellipse watches. The bracelet model discussed here is the 5738/1R-001, introduced in 2024 in 18K rose gold. Its defining feature is not a different complication or movement, but a fully polished rose-gold bracelet built from individually assembled links. Patek Philippe’s current Golden Ellipse range also includes strap and other metal or dial variants.
The Golden Ellipse design dates to 1968. Patek Philippe connects its elongated case proportions to the golden ratio, using a form that sits between a circle and a rectangle rather than following the conventional round-watch outline. Thierry Stern, Patek Philippe’s president, describes the design as “purity and beauty expressed through simple design” on the brand’s Golden Ellipse collection page.
Case, dial and legibility
Compact footprint, unusually thin profile
The rose-gold case measures 34.5 mm across from 3 to 9 o’clock and 39.5 mm from 6 to 12 o’clock, with a thickness of 5.9 mm. These are manufacturer dimensions; the elongated shape means the 39.5 mm length is the more relevant figure when considering how much of the wrist the case spans. Patek Philippe specifies a solid case back and water resistance to 30 m. The rating is a specification, not a claim that the watch is intended for swimming or diving.

Black dial, minimal display
The ebony-black sunburst dial is made on an 18K gold plate and carries applied rose-gold baton indexes. Slim cheveu-style hands indicate hours and minutes; there is no seconds hand, date, or additional display. That restraint suits the Ellipse’s formal, design-led character, but it also means there is no seconds indication to use as a quick visual timing reference.
Caliber 240 and what it offers
The 5738/1R-001 is powered by Patek Philippe’s caliber 240, an ultra-thin self-winding movement. The manufacturer lists a 27.5 mm diameter, 2.53 mm thickness, 27 jewels, a 22K gold off-center minirotor, a frequency of 21,600 semi-oscillations per hour (3 Hz), and a minimum power reserve of 48 hours. These are published specifications, not independently measured performance figures.

The movement’s component total differs between Patek Philippe’s materials: the current product page lists 152 parts, while the 2024 release gives 161. The brand’s product page is available at 5738/1R-001; the original release is at Patek Philippe’s 2024 announcement. The differing totals should not be treated as a single settled figure.
The bracelet is the main point of difference
Patek Philippe says the bracelet comprises 363 components, including more than 300 links assembled manually one by one. It is fully polished rose gold and closes with an engraved clasp offering three adjustment notches. Those details make the bracelet the watch’s most distinctive practical and visual feature compared with the otherwise related strap version.

SJX’s published hands-on coverage likewise identifies the bracelet as the key distinction of the 5738/1R and describes the watch as a two-hander with caliber 240 behind a solid case back (SJX coverage). These are the author’s observations; they do not establish this article’s writer’s personal experience wearing or handling the watch.
5738/1R vs 5738R and 5738P
The closest choice is between the bracelet 5738/1R-001 and the strap-equipped 5738R-001. The platinum 5738P-001 is another conventional Golden Ellipse option, while the white-gold 5738/51G-001 Rare Handcrafts edition has a substantially different dial treatment and is not a straightforward bracelet-versus-strap alternative.
