Introduced in 2018 as the collection’s first Grand Complication, it pairs a slim profile with a calendar that accounts for different month lengths and leap years. “The Nautilus we had to have” is an editorial take on that combination—not a claim about universal demand.
What is the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5740?
The exact reference is 5740/1G-001. Patek Philippe describes it as an 18K white-gold Nautilus Perpetual Calendar and identifies it as the first Grand Complication in the Nautilus collection. The brand introduced the model at Baselworld in 2018, within a collection it says began in 1976. Patek Philippe’s current model page and its 2018 Baselworld release establish those details.
The appeal is specific: Nautilus styling and an integrated white-gold bracelet surround a perpetual calendar, one of watchmaking’s more involved calendar complications. Patek Philippe called it a combination of casual sportiness and technical finesse in its launch release; that is the manufacturer’s characterization, not an independent performance assessment.
What does the Nautilus 5740 perpetual calendar show?
The self-winding Caliber 240 Q displays day, date, month, leap-year cycle and a 24-hour indication, alongside moon phases. In the arrangement described in Patek Philippe’s 2018 release, the day and 24-hour indication sit at 9 o’clock, month and leap-year cycle at 3 o’clock, and date and moon-phase display at 6 o’clock.

A perpetual calendar is designed to account for months of different lengths, including the recurring February 29, without requiring the wearer to correct the date at each month’s end under normal calendar operation. Patek Philippe describes that function in the launch release. It is a mechanical complication, not a promise that the watch can be left unattended indefinitely: the movement still needs to remain running and to be set correctly after it stops.
Caliber 240 Q: a thin automatic perpetual calendar
The official specifications give the movement a diameter of 27.5 mm and thickness of 3.88 mm. It has 275 parts, 27 jewels, and a stated power reserve of 38 to 48 hours; its frequency is 21,600 semi-oscillations per hour, or 3 Hz. Patek Philippe lists a 22K-gold off-center minirotor, Gyromax balance, Spiromax balance spring and Patek Philippe Seal.

The 8.42 mm case thickness is notable in the context of a watch carrying a self-winding perpetual calendar. The figures describe the manufacturer’s published specifications; they are not the result of an independent measurement.
Case, dial and water resistance
Patek Philippe’s current model page specifies a 40 mm case, measured from 10 to 4 o’clock, in 18K white gold. It lists a sunburst-blue dial with horizontal embossing, a white-gold bracelet, sapphire crystal case back and screw-down crown. The listed water resistance is 30 m.

There is a discrepancy worth noting if water resistance affects your decision: Patek Philippe’s 2018 release stated 60 m, while the current product page states 30 m. These are conflicting published specifications, not values that should be combined or treated as interchangeable. For the current figure, consult the newer product page; the historical figure appears in the 2018 release. Water resistance is not a measure of suitability for every kind of swimming or water activity.
Is the Patek Philippe 5740 discontinued?
Patek Philippe’s current Nautilus collection listing includes the 5740/1G-001 while stating that the models displayed are discontinued from its collection. This supports describing the reference as discontinued from the collection as of that listing; it does not establish when production ended, how many were made, or whether a particular retailer has one available. Who is the 5740 for?
The 5740 makes most sense for a buyer specifically drawn to the combination of Nautilus design, white-gold construction and a perpetual calendar in a relatively thin case. Its multiple calendar indications reward a wearer who values the complication and is comfortable with a more information-dense dial. If a simpler display, less involved ownership or a different material is the priority, those preferences should guide comparison with other watches; the specifications above alone do not establish how the 5740 compares with any particular alternative.
