The Grand Seiko SBGP017 is a limited-edition 44GS with a specially regulated quartz movement, a richly textured blue dial and a useful time-zone adjustment. Its appeal is not that quartz beats mechanical watches at everything; it is that Grand Seiko treats quartz as a serious watchmaking choice, with a stated accuracy of ±5 seconds per year and a design that gives the movement no reason to hide.
Why the SBGP017 challenges movement snobbery
Some watch enthusiasts treat mechanical movements as inherently more worthy than quartz. The SBGP017 offers a grounded counterpoint: it is a luxury watch whose quartz movement is central to its identity, not an invisible compromise. Grand Seiko announced it on June 7, 2022, as a Heritage Collection limited edition marking 55 years of the 44GS design, first introduced in 1967. Production was set at 2,000 watches worldwide, with a planned July 2022 release through Grand Seiko boutiques and selected retailers. Grand Seiko’s announcement
The argument is specific rather than universal. A mechanical movement may appeal for its construction, tradition or relationship to the wearer; the SBGP017 makes its own case through precision as rated by its maker, everyday convenience and a distinctive design. The manufacturer’s rating is not an independently verified result, and it should be read on those terms.
Caliber 9F85: precision and a practical time-zone adjustment
A manufacturer-rated ±5 seconds per year
Grand Seiko specifies quartz Caliber 9F85 for the SBGP017, with accuracy of +5 to -5 seconds per year when used between 5°C and 35°C. The company says it achieves this special accuracy by using aged, individually selected quartz crystals. The figure is a manufacturer specification; it is not a performance measurement independently established here. Grand Seiko’s 2022 specification

The five-pointed gold star at six o’clock signals that special rating. Grand Seiko says, “The five-pointed star at the six o’clock position symbolizes the watch’s high accuracy.”
Changing the hour without stopping the seconds
The 9F85 includes a time-difference adjustment that moves the hour hand without stopping the seconds hand. When adjusting the watch for a different time zone, the wearer can change the displayed hour while preserving the seconds indication. Grand Seiko also says the movement’s backlash auto-adjust mechanism is intended to prevent seconds-hand shudder, while its twin-pulse control system enables the minute and seconds hands to reach the dial edge. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions of the movement’s design and function, not independent test findings. Grand Seiko’s movement details

44GS design, interpreted in blue
The SBGP017 combines the 44GS design language—sharp edges and flat surfaces—with a blue-toned dial whose texture Grand Seiko says is inspired by clouds forming over the mountains of Shinshu. The U.S. boutique describes the dial pattern as Iwao. Zaratsu-polished and hairline-finished surfaces create contrasting treatments across the case, while the dial’s color and texture keep the design from feeling like a purely formal exercise. Launch pricing and present availability
Launch prices differed by market and are historical, not current resale guidance. Grand Seiko gave an approximate recommended retail price of €3,800 in Europe in 2022. Seiko Watch Corporation listed a Japanese suggested retail price of ¥440,000 including tax; its July 8, 2022 release notice said 800 of the 2,000 worldwide pieces were allocated to Japan. Who the SBGP017 suits
- Consider it if you want the 44GS look and a blue, textured dial, but prefer the convenience of quartz and an hour-hand adjustment that leaves the seconds running.
- Look elsewhere if the mechanical movement itself—its construction, operation or tradition—is the main reason you want a luxury watch. The SBGP017 is unapologetically quartz.
- Check carefully before buying if shopping outside Grand Seiko’s boutique: the limited edition is no longer listed as available on the official U.S. page, and current third-party stock and resale prices are not established here.
The SBGP017 does not settle quartz-versus-mechanical debates. It does show that a quartz watch can carry the design intent, finishing and specialist engineering associated with a high-end watch—and make a clear, practical case for its own kind of appeal.
