The Paulin Commuter Automatic is a 2017 mechanical watch with a Japanese Miyota 9015 automatic movement, a 37 mm stated case dimension and a distinctly graphic dial. Paulin is a Glasgow-founded brand and says it now assembles its products in-house in Glasgow; that does not establish that every component of this model is made there. Its £395 price was the launch price in 2017, not a verified current price.
What is the Paulin Commuter Automatic?
Paulin introduced the Commuter Automatic on August 22, 2017, as its first mechanical watch. The brand said it carried over the proportions and style of its best-selling Commuter, adding bespoke Geo numerals and a layered dial. The launch announcement is available from Paulin Watches.
Its appeal is primarily in the combination of restrained case dimensions and a more distinctive dial treatment: radial grooves, skeleton hands and a yellow central seconds hand give the face more visual character than a plain three-hand layout.
What movement is in the Commuter Automatic?
Paulin’s launch specifications name the Japanese Miyota 9015 automatic movement. The launch post calls it “highly accurate and reliable,” but that is the brand’s characterization, not an independently established performance comparison. The cited model information does not specify power reserve, accuracy tolerance, jewel count or service interval.

How big is the Paulin Commuter Automatic?
Paulin lists the watch as 37 mm by 10.5 mm deep, with a 45 mm lug-to-lug length. These dimensions make the watch relatively compact on paper, though wrist fit also depends on wrist shape, strap and personal preference. The launch page does not specify lug width, so replacement-strap compatibility cannot be confirmed from those figures.
What are the case, crystal and dial like?
- Case: Paulin describes a three-piece 316L stainless-steel case with PVD coating and a finely brushed satin finish. The brand notes additional detail in the vertically brushed sides.
- Crystal: The front glass and exhibition-back glass are described as sapphire-coated. The cited specification does not establish that either is solid sapphire.
- Dial: A two-layer construction combines radial grooves with bespoke Geo numerals. Skeleton hands and the yellow central seconds hand add contrast.
- Strap: The watch was supplied with English bridle leather from Clayton’s tannery.
The exhibition back shows the movement. Paulin’s launch announcement does not state water resistance or warranty terms.

Is the Paulin Commuter Automatic designed and assembled in Glasgow?
Paulin says it was founded in Glasgow in 2013 and describes the company’s current work and shared production and studio space with anOrdain in Glasgow’s Southside. Its About Us page says assembly moved in-house to a watchmaking team shared with anOrdain during the company’s 2023–2025 reorganization.
This supports describing Paulin as a Glasgow-founded brand that currently assembles its products in-house there. It is not evidence that every Commuter Automatic component is made in Glasgow, or that each individual watch’s assembly history is separately documented. The named Japanese movement and the supplied English bridle leather also show why “Glasgow assembled” should not be mistaken for “entirely Scottish-made.”

Was the Commuter Automatic worth £395?
Paulin listed the watch at £395 when it launched in 2017 and said it could be bought through its Glasgow shop or website at that time. That is a historical launch price, not a current price or proof that the model is still available.
At that launch price, the published proposition was a named automatic movement, a steel case with PVD coating, sapphire-coated front and display-back glass, and a leather strap, paired with a more individual dial design. Whether that represented good value depends on the buyer’s priorities; the available model information does not establish a comparative value ranking or performance advantage over another watch.
