A perpetual calendar also accounts for leap years, including February 29, so it is designed to keep the date aligned through ordinary leap years without that annual correction. “Perpetual” is not a promise of correction-free operation forever: some movements need adjustment in century years when the Gregorian calendar skips a leap day.
How the calendars handle month lengths
A standard date display that assumes every month has 31 days needs correction after shorter months. Patek Philippe says this means five corrections a year for a standard date calendar (Patek Philippe’s explanation of calendar watches).

Annual calendar
An annual calendar recognizes the difference between 30- and 31-day months. February is the exception: it is treated like a 30-day month, so the date needs correction at February’s end. It does not account for leap years in the standard definition described by Blancpain (Blancpain’s explanation of watch complications).
Perpetual calendar
A perpetual calendar accounts for month lengths and the leap-year cycle, including February 29 in leap years. It is designed to display the correct date through ordinary leap years without an annual February correction. Patek Philippe says it introduced its annual calendar in 1996; that date is specific to the brand’s complication history, not the origin of the category as a whole (Patek Philippe).

| Routine correction described by the sources | One correction at February’s end. | None through ordinary leap years while operating correctly; century-year handling depends on the movement. |

Why a perpetual calendar may still need correction
Under the Gregorian calendar, century years are not leap years unless divisible by 400. The years 2100, 2200 and 2300 therefore skip February 29. A. Lange & Söhne says its perpetual calendar watches require a one-day date advance on March 1 in those years; IWC also describes a small correction for its calendar in centurial years that omit the leap day. These examples show why century-year behavior is specific to the movement rather than a universal procedure (A. Lange & Söhne; IWC).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which distinction matters when choosing?
Start with how often you are willing to correct the date and whether leap-year handling matters to you. An annual calendar requires a February-end adjustment each year; a perpetual calendar is designed to handle ordinary leap years automatically. For any specific watch, check its manual for setting limits and correction steps: these are movement-specific, and the cited descriptions do not establish a general price, reliability or servicing-cost comparison.
