An automatic mechanical movement powers timekeeping; the turbine is the collection’s visible signature, not a substitute for the watch’s timekeeping mechanism. Specifications vary by reference and generation, so case size, reserve, materials and functions should be checked against the exact model.
What makes a Perrelet Turbine watch distinctive?
The Turbine combines an automatic watch with a freely moving turbine display on the dial. Perrelet’s 2019 trade catalogue describes a configuration in which a 12-blade aluminum turbine spans the dial. Its motion creates the collection’s kinetic visual effect, while the mechanical movement handles timekeeping.
That design links the Turbine to Perrelet’s Double Rotor concept: the turbine is the visible dial-side element, paired with an automatic movement. The 2019 catalogue describes the Turbine as an adaptation of Double Rotor and identifies its movement as the in-house P-331. Those details describe the catalogue’s configuration, not every Turbine reference. Perrelet’s 2019 trade catalogue
How does the Double Rotor concept work?
In a conventional automatic watch, wrist motion drives the movement’s winding system. The Turbine adds a visible dial-side rotor-like element that can turn above the dial. It is the movement of that turbine that gives the watch its signature appearance; it should not be confused with a second timekeeping movement or with the turbine displaying the time.

For example, the 2019 catalogue’s P-331 configuration is listed with 42 hours of autonomy and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz). GPHG lists reference A5006/1 with a 40-hour reserve and 28,800 vph. These figures come from different cited configurations and should not be treated as a single universal Turbine specification. What changes with the Turbine Chrono?
The Turbine Chrono retains the moving turbine concept but adds a chronograph. GPHG’s listing for reference A1074/2 gives a 47 mm diameter, 16 mm thickness and 42-hour power reserve. It describes chronograph readings through a central seconds hand and a 60-minute counter, with the turbine visible beneath the display. This is a larger, more complicated example than the 44 mm time-only A5006/1 listed by GPHG; its dimensions and reserve should not be generalized to other Turbine watches. How to compare Turbine watches before buying
Start with the full reference number, then compare the individual watch’s documentation and condition. A collection name alone is not enough to establish a specification: the cited examples already differ in reserve, case material, diameter and complication.
- Confirm the exact reference and generation. Match the number on the listing to the watch, papers and reliable manufacturer or institutional specifications. Do not assume that a specification for A5006/1 applies to another Turbine.
- Check case dimensions and materials. Compare diameter and thickness, and confirm the case material and whether the watch comes on a strap or bracelet. For example, GPHG identifies A5006/1 as 44 mm titanium, while its A1074/2 Turbine Chrono is 47 mm and 16 mm thick.
- Identify the movement and stated reserve. Record the caliber, automatic or self-winding description, power reserve and frequency as given for that reference. The 40-hour GPHG figure for A5006/1 and the 42-hour figure in the 2019 P-331 catalogue are tied to their respective sources and configurations.
- Compare the complication and water resistance. Establish whether the watch is time-only or a chronograph, and check the water-resistance rating for the exact reference. The 5 ATM rating belongs to the catalogue’s 2019 P-331 configuration, not to the whole collection.
- Assess the specific watch, not just its model. For a pre-owned example, request clear photographs and details of condition, service history, included papers and box, warranty coverage and the seller’s return terms. These vary by individual listing and are not established by collection-level specifications.
Launch dates and collection history
The available historical accounts use different dates for different milestones. GPHG lists reference A5006/1 with a 2008 launch date, while retailer Freret-Roy describes the Turbine’s introduction in 2009. These statements can refer to a particular reference and the broader collection, respectively, so neither should be presented as an unqualified date for every Turbine. Freret-Roy also identifies 1995 as a Double Rotor patent or invention milestone; that date is retailer-published historical background. GPHG: Turbine A5006/1; Freret-Roy: Perrelet history
