Cartier’s “watchmaker of shapes” identity is expressed through recognizable watch silhouettes that the house continues to reinterpret. In a 2024 interview, Pierre Rainero, Cartier’s Image, Style, and Heritage Director, described that design language through the history of forms such as the Tank, Tonneau, and Tortue—and through Cartier Privé’s return to historic models.
What does Cartier mean by “watchmaker of shapes”?
The phrase points to an approach to watch design in which the outline of the case is central to a model’s identity. In Russell Sheldrake’s May 10, 2024 interview with Rainero, Cartier’s history is presented not simply as a catalogue of past watches, but as a continuing exploration of lines and forms. Historic silhouettes remain recognizable while later versions interpret them for a new moment.
This is Cartier’s design narrative as described in the interview, not an independent measure of the house’s influence on watchmaking. The conversation took place at Cartier’s Watches & Wonders booth, in the context of the 2024 Privé Tortue time-only watch and Monopoussoir chronograph.
How Cartier’s shapes developed
From Santos to Tonneau
Rainero links Cartier’s interest in watch lines to the Santos, introduced in 1904. He said: “In fact, since the creation of the first Santos watch in 1904, Cartier has constantly been researching how to create purer lines for watches, which is why in 1906 we created the Tonneau.” The statement describes Rainero’s account of the house’s design history.

The Tank’s rectangular identity
The interview says the first Cartier Tank was designed and made in 1917. Its rectangular form gives it a distinct identity among the silhouettes discussed, and the Tank remains one of the recognizable historic designs in Cartier’s ongoing re-interpretive conversation.
Tortue and the exploration of form
Rainero describes the Tortue as part of a longer exploration of lines, shape, and how a watch sits on the wrist, relating its design to the earlier Tonneau form. That is his explanation in the interview; it is not a comparative comfort test. The 2024 Privé release brought the Tortue forward in time-only and monopusher chronograph versions.
