One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchYes—the Pixel Watch 4 makes a meaningful improvement in both areas, but neither upgrade is as simple as “it lasts all day” or “the screen is easy to replace.” Google rates the 41mm model for up to 30 hours and the 45mm model for up to 40 hours with Always-on Display enabled, compared with up to 24 hours for the Pixel Watch 3. The Watch 4 also uses screws and gaskets so its battery and display can be serviced instead of treating the entire watch as a replacement-only device.
That makes the Pixel Watch 4 a stronger long-term purchase—particularly in 45mm—but heavy LTE, GPS and music use can still drain it quickly, while screen repair remains a moderate precision job with a risk to water resistance.
Pixel Watch 4 versus Pixel Watch 3: battery comparison
| Model | Always-on Display | Battery Saver |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel Watch 4, 41mm | Up to 30 hours | Up to 48 hours |
| Pixel Watch 4, 45mm | Up to 40 hours | Up to 72 hours |
| Pixel Watch 3, 41mm and 45mm | Up to 24 hours | Up to 36 hours |

The 41mm Pixel Watch 4 adds up to six hours to Google’s official Always-on Display rating. The 45mm version adds up to 16 hours, although Google’s Pixel Watch 3 table groups both Watch 3 sizes together, so that comparison is not perfectly like-for-like.

Google describes the Watch 4 as offering roughly 25% longer battery life. That is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee of 25% more runtime in every situation. Display settings, cellular connectivity, GPS, health tracking, notifications and app use all matter.
What battery life is like in practice
Independent testing of the 45mm LTE model generally approached Google’s 40-hour estimate with Always-on Display active during ordinary use. The same testing also shows why “up to 40 hours” should not be treated as a fixed result.
- Sleep tracking: about 7–10% over seven to eight hours.
- Wi-Fi/Bluetooth music streaming: approximately 11–12% in the reported tests.
- LTE/Bluetooth streaming: about 18% per hour.
- LTE, Bluetooth streaming and dual-band GPS together: about 28% per hour.
- Dual-band GPS alone: approximately 8–12% per hour.
Those figures come from one tester and should not be treated as universal benchmarks. They do establish the practical pattern: notifications, health tracking and sleep monitoring are compatible with the Watch 4’s headline endurance, while cellular streaming and GPS-heavy activities can reduce runtime to only several hours.
Battery Saver extends Google’s ratings to up to 48 hours on the 41mm model and 72 hours on the 45mm model, but it changes the normal smartwatch experience by limiting or altering some features. It is an emergency or endurance mode, not a direct substitute for ordinary full-featured use.

A larger battery gives you more margin for sleep tracking, and faster charging makes it easier to top up during a short daily break. Google says the Watch 4 reaches 0–50% in approximately 15 minutes with the Quick Charge Dock and charges about 25% faster than the Pixel Watch 3. See Google’s product announcement.

Why the battery lasts longer
Google says the Watch 4 uses a custom-shaped stacked-cell battery rather than the previous roll-stack design. According to Google, this increases volumetric energy density by 50% without making the watch thicker.
That does not mean the watch automatically delivers 50% more runtime. Battery life also depends on the processor, display, software efficiency, radios and the way the watch is used. The architectural change is better understood as giving Google more battery capacity within the same general space, while the rest of the system determines how much of that capacity becomes real-world endurance.
The 45mm model is the battery choice
If battery life is your priority, the 45mm Pixel Watch 4 is the clear choice: Google rates it for up to 40 hours with Always-on Display and up to 72 hours in Battery Saver, versus 30 and 48 hours respectively for the 41mm model.

The trade-off is size and weight. The 45mm case is larger and heavier, while the 41mm model is better suited to smaller wrists or anyone who values a lighter watch. Choose the 41mm if comfort and proportions matter more than maximum endurance; choose the 45mm if avoiding midday charging is the priority.
Are Pixel Watch 4 screen replacements actually easier?
Yes, compared with earlier Pixel Watches. The Watch 4 was designed to be serviceable rather than simply replaced. Screws and gaskets are used at key repair interfaces, and the back can be opened without heating or dissolving the main adhesive layer used by many tightly sealed electronics.

Google says the display uses a replaceable O-ring gasket. The battery and display are separate service operations, and the sensor glass can remain connected while internal components are accessed. Google has also published service manuals for the 41mm and 45mm versions. The company explains the design in its repairability article.
iFixit’s teardown found that the battery is held by screws and a connector rather than adhesive. It awarded the Watch 4 a provisional 9/10 repairability score. That is useful evidence about the construction, but it is iFixit’s assessment, not an official industry-wide ranking. iFixit also sells repair parts and tools, including genuine Google components.
What a screen repair involves
“Replaceable” does not mean “easy.” iFixit lists the 45mm display repair as moderate difficulty and estimates 30 minutes to one hour. The genuine 45mm screen and digitizer kit was listed at $99.99 as observed on August 18, 2026. That is the part price—not the total cost once tools, shipping, tax or professional labor are included.
The repair requires precision tools including 1IP, 2IP and 5IP Torx Plus bits, a spudger and tweezers. The 1IP driver is uncommon, so a standard Torx kit may not be enough. Confirm the tool contents before ordering.
A failed repair can damage the display connector, sensor assembly, case, battery or gasket. A cracked or distorted housing may also mean that replacing the screen alone will not solve the problem. If the watch has LTE, crown, sensor or motherboard damage as well as a broken display, professional service is usually the more sensible option.

Water resistance after opening the watch
This is the most important qualification to the repairability story.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteGoogle designed the gasket-based construction to make maintaining the seal after repair more achievable. However, Google’s safety documentation warns that dust and water resistance are not permanent and may be diminished or lost through normal wear, damage, repair or disassembly. Google recommends professional assistance and warns that self-repair carries risks. See the Pixel Watch 4 safety and regulatory guide.
Do not assume a repaired Watch 4 is as reliable in water as a factory-sealed watch. If you swim frequently, depend on water resistance, or cannot accept the possibility of water damage, use Google or an authorized professional repair service and ask what post-repair inspection is available. Even then, do not treat water resistance as permanent.

Is repairability enough reason to upgrade?
For most buyers, the battery improvement is the benefit they will notice immediately. The repairable construction is the more important long-term change.
A screen can remain intact for years, while batteries inevitably lose capacity. The Watch 4’s direct access to the battery means that eventual battery replacement is potentially more valuable than the ability to replace a cracked display. Google says the new battery design also allows access without disconnecting the biosensor hub.
The Watch 4 is a particularly sensible upgrade for:
- Pixel Watch 1, 2 or 3 owners concerned about battery degradation.
- People who want to keep a smartwatch for several years.
- Buyers who have previously discarded a watch after screen damage.
- Repair-conscious or environmentally conscious buyers.
- Users who want the best chance of getting two-day potential from a Wear OS watch, especially in 45mm.
It is less compelling if you already own a Watch 3 and are satisfied with its runtime, or if you want several days or a week of battery life. Garmin and some OnePlus models may be more attractive for endurance-focused athletes, although their software and health ecosystems differ. Apple Watch is not a practical alternative for Android users, while Galaxy Watch is most compelling for people already invested in Samsung’s ecosystem.
Buying checklist
- Pick the size first: choose 45mm for maximum battery life and 41mm for a smaller, lighter fit.
- Set realistic battery expectations: Google’s 30-hour and 40-hour figures include Always-on Display but remain “up to” estimates.
- Account for LTE and GPS: cellular streaming, calls, navigation and GPS workouts can dramatically reduce endurance.
- Check parts in your region: a repairable design is less useful if genuine parts or authorized service are unavailable locally.
- Price the whole repair: include the part, compatible tools, labor, shipping and the possibility of a failed repair.
- Confirm the case size: a 45mm screen is not a substitute for a 41mm screen.
- Decide how important water resistance is: opening the watch introduces sealing uncertainty.
Verdict
The headline is substantially accurate. Pixel Watch 4 battery life is materially better than Pixel Watch 3 battery life, with the 45mm model delivering the most meaningful improvement. The new mechanical construction also makes battery and display replacement genuinely possible rather than treating the watch as disposable.
But this is not a miracle battery or a cheap, risk-free screen swap. Heavy LTE and GPS use can still drain the watch quickly, a genuine 45mm screen costs $99.99 before labor and tools based on the cited August 18, 2026 listing, and opening the watch can reduce or eliminate its water resistance.
For long-term Pixel users, the Watch 4’s repairability is a strong reason to choose it. For everyone else, buy it primarily for the improved battery and treat repairability as valuable insurance—not as a promise that every repair will be easy or economical.
